Win Glitch on Live TV with still frames/scene changes
#16
@jezcooke,

Did you notice that on Kodi-Jarvis beta 5 the problem is more serious? I found today that the video playback is not smooth and the audio cuts in and out for the test files that you gave me (I test this by setting serverwmc to treat the files you gave me as if it was live stream data). I tried the same thing in Kodi15 and VLC and there is no problem. Please let me know.

Hi, yes now you mention it the effect has been worse recently (I couldn't easily say which beta of Jarvis this started from). It occurs just as often as before but the audio cutting out and re-buffering was relatively rare previously (it could happen in a prolonged still frame in Isengard but now happens a lot of the time).

Since jarvis is so much worse and since this ts data file plays fine in vlc and Emby, I submitted it as a kodi bug (see below). I still want to look at what is going on as a backup but fixing this in kodi would be the best solution.

Hi @jezcooke,

The latest kodi 17 nightly (KodiSetup-20160117) contains a fix for the problem re- introduced in kodi16. The fix was implemented by @FernetMenta and he took a different approach than what was done in previous kodi builds, so I am hoping that - besides fixing the Kodi16 problem - it might fix the more subtle problem this thread is about. Please give this nightly a try and let us know, it is working great for me with the test files I got from you.

Also FernetMenta back ported this fix into kodi 16, so we should be good on the next release of Kodi 16 too.

Thanks FernetMenta!!

Hi it was me who reported this same issue a while back (http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=...pid1857627). It does seem to be HD only and at least on ITV and BBC HD channels.

Anyway not much I can add as I think the problem has been described exactly how I see it so I'll also give v17 nightlies a try and report back also..

Out of interest what tuners are you using jezcooke? I have a TBS6284 (quad DVB-T/T2) and I always wandered if this was the issue?

Hi @kitehigh,

Yes, it was you I was referring to. Glad to see you are still around to test. Curious to hear what you find.

@kitehigh and @jezcooke,

I think you will find that the latest kodi17 change has no effect on the original glitch problem that this thread and Kitehigh's thread reported. I believe this because in my testing the file from Kitehigh still shows the glitch. After banging my head against this for a day I think I have found the bug. Its triggered by very small PES packets, which I suppose explains why it shows up in h264 (but it seems possible that it could show up in other formats too). I need to work with the fix some more, but hope to have a preview up soon. Hope you guys will test when its up.

Hi krusty. I installed v17 but no pvr add ons seemed to be included yet... so tried 16rc1 (looked like the changes were back ported? ) but this was worse than 15.2 - same glitches reported as before and in this thread plus other pixelation introduced (at least on my windows box) that was noticable on scenes with movement in them (a lot of scenes).
Thanks for looking at this again and yes I'll be happy to test!

Hi Krusty, thanks for the update indeed as you say Kodi 17 didn't help and I switched back to 16 RC1 now. I'm more than happy to test a preview version! when you have it! :-)

Very small packets would seem to make a lot of sense as that would tie up with static scenes with little or no changes in them.

@kitehigh I currently have a TBS 6205 and two Astromedia USB sticks (all DVB-T/T2) I previously had a TBS 6285 but it failed (confusing this issue when it first occurred) and I had to RMA it, the USB sticks were a stop-gap while waiting for postage to/from China but I kept them and have all 6 tuners now! Anyway not tuner related, they all behave the same!

I put up a new preview release (1227). It should fix the small packet glitch - and as a bonus - it fixes the problem that caused kodi16 beta5 not to correctly play these h.264 channels. (Although this problem was fixed in rc1 as we know)

I have been testing with kodi16-beta5 and kodi16-rc1 and all seems good, but all I can use is the test files you guys have given me - live broadcasts may be a different story. Let me know what you find.

Edit:
If you still find problems, turn off the deleting of temporary files and save me the wtv files that show the glitch.

Thumbs Up
Krusty, I had a few minutes before work this morning - I installed 1227 and tried a couple of recordings I know to cause problems (with Remuxing playback of all files ON).

So far so good! No glitches on the graphical parts which used to cause problems Big Grin

The other pixellation was apparently related to the DirectX11 change for Jarvis so unrelated to ServerWMC (put in a GT610 card I had spare which solved this).

I'll be testing it out some more and report back if I see anything else, but looks like you may have sorted it so thanks for taking the time to dig into the problem and put together the fix!
