MINIX NEO U1: (64bit AMLogic S905 / 10-bit 4K HEVC / HDMI 2.0)

The U1 was my first attempt at getting into Kodi. I purchased the U1 with the matching remote.
I like the apps and the UI that comes with the box, they have their own version of XBMC that seemed more stable on the U1 than my attempts at playing with Kodi.

I set the unit up through the Ethernet port on my 50/50 fiber line and went to the Google store and DL'd Kodi 16.1. I then installed a couple builds but settled on an Pulse build. I really enjoyed the experience. Unfortunately the U1 started misbehaving. I would open Kodi and it would appear for a second and then the screen would revert to the "all apps" screen. I would click on Kodi and it would open for a sec, then back to "all apps" over and over and over until for whatever reason it would finally stay. I cleared cache (I seem to spend more time clearing cache than watching content) and rebooted but the behavior never improved. Someone on the Minix forum told me to just forget Kodi, do a factory reset (which is kind of like the advice of "unplug it and plug it back in) and use the custom Minix XBMC that was provided on the box. I did exactly that.

I played with the provided custom Minix XBMC but had a hard time getting it to recognize my Windows 7 home network.
Now, a little background on the W7 PC network issue….I know its difficult to work with. I purchased a WD player several years ago, one of the first generation, and it would not work with my W7 network at all. I spent probably 80 hours troubleshooting (I became something of a network specialist) and never could get it to work. Fast forward to their third generation player and it worked flawlessly, never a snag. Which brought me to the conclusion that a player could in fact be designed to actually work reliably with a W7 network.
So, anyways I tried to point the U1 at my network and add it as a source. Without going on and on, let me just say that it was a pain. The add source methodolgy just wouldnt see my SMB network, until one time on my twentieth attempt it did, for whatever reason. So finally it loaded the info and scraped the content.

Playback is not a smooth as I would have hoped. Audio/video sync issues and freezes among other things. I would be watching a movie and pause it and when I came back it would start this odd behavior of having the audio drop out every 15 seconds or so for about a second. Very annoying.

I consider this thing to be too buggy.

I have an admittedly older W7 PC on a home Gigabit network with a 50/50 fiber line. Is there a bullet proof Android box that will reliably work with my network, play everything I throw at it reliably and allow a fully functional Kodi experience? I am sending the U1 back and need a reliable palyer. Until this point the Boxee Box and then the WD player was all I needed, now with those being obsolete I need a reliable player.
Help!

So I thought i would watch a movie I just added to my PC and I started the U1 and tried to refresh the library to see the new movie. Its stuck at preparing... and has been for three minutes. This thing is incredibly buggy, I thought Minix made better products. Its not like Im asking it to do much, just friggin read from my PC ten feet away!

So any recommendations, or this just a site inhabited by moderators without any useful suggestions too busy policing the site?

It will be a setup problem for sure, the U1 is fully capable.

EDIT: There is a test version of SPMC 16.6.0 available that allows easy addition of SMB Shares when using Android (Hint - use Zeroconf)

Suggestion: (and this is a Known SMB problem with a number of Android Boxes)

Add Videos > Browse > Add network location > Server name > Enter IP Address of SMB server > OK

Select the SMB:IP Address of the SMB Server that now shows in the Browse for New Share List > select Folders/Files

I also suggest you read This thread

AND head over to the MINIX U1 Support forums where you will find comprehensive help.

If you want the ultimate Kodi on the U1, then flash a Samsung EVO or Sandisk Class 10 microSDHC card with LibreELEC Kodi Smile

Now it's $105 at geekbuying if anybody is interested.

After one year still going strong. Minix team puts new firmware out all the time and Libreelec support is also great.
Im using it with Libreelec few months now, especially version 7 of LE is really mature now.
24p perfect playback, HD audio, SMB and NFS, all works great.
Dont plan to go back to Android any time soon.

Well I ordered one of these to replace my aging Nexus Player. It comes in tomorrow from Amazon finally. Should I stick with the Android Kodi install or attempt to put that Libreec Kodi version everyone keeps referencing?

You can keep both - just flash LibreELEC Kodi on to the recommended, Samsung EVO or Sandisk UHS-1 Class 10 microSDHC card and insert and hold down the U1's power button till the green Robot appears and you will boot into LibreELEC. Smile

when a device is booted to LibreELEC on SD card, do all it's read/write operations also goto the SD card or devices internal storage ?

If that's the case, does this make it slower overall (despite using decent SD cards) ?

In terms of Kodi speed it is like this so far as storage is concerned:

SSD > HDD > eMMC > NAND > SD card

All R/W is contained on the SD card itself, unless you actually tell LibreELEC to flash to internal, faster eMMC Storage.

Write / Storage operations are noticeably slower with SD cards - but LibreELEC Kodi does not do a lot Write operations anyway day to day.
Its all very usable.

HDD (and even SSD) faster than eMMC / NAND?
I have some doubts...

Ok, I will test out the "vanilla" Android Kodi install until I manage to get a MicroSD card to test Libre on. Forgot to add the SD card to my cart when checking out on Amazon. Damn.

How exactly do you go back to normal boot after you have removed the microSDHC card? Was the green robot always present during boot process? It seems to me like the boot process is longer after I have tried LibreELEC.

Pretty cool device this is. Paired it with an air mouse remote thing since the remote it came with is pretty much useless for navigating the Android Desktop environment. It even has a built in FTP server, which I was surprised to find.
Came with a few pre-installed apps that were easily removed, so no complaints there either.

Installed Plex, Kodi, HDHomeRun Prime and Netflix. Everything is working smooth as butter. No complaints. The WiFi signal seems to be much better then my old Nexus Player. My Nexus player would jump between the 2.4 and 5ghz Signals at whim, this one stays right on 5ghz.

I only have two issues; the leanback launcher will install but will not "activate". Even setting it as "always" just kind of makes the screen flicker and then I'm dumped into "Launcher3" or MINIX launcher. and the volume keys on my remote only control the volume on the Android Box. Can't figure out how to get it to control the Volume on the TV. Figured with HDMI CEC it would control the TV but unfortunately it does not.

I'm not sure I am going to attempt to mess with LibreELEC Kodi because how much better could that possibly run?

This device is probably way more over-kill then what I'm using it for (hooked up to a 1080p TV in the bedroom - using the Plex plugin with Kodi and watching TV via HDHomeRun) but I'm very pleased with it!

**EDIT/UPDATE**:
Finally have everything set up Kodi / Plex etc wise and now Kodi is "Crashing to Desktop" almost every time. Not sure what is causing this issue now all of a sudden.
