I have not changed the calibration on my 65" JS8500 panel for 1080p blu-rays and continue to upscale them to 2160p. Backlight 20, Contrast 81, and Brightness 61. To expand the range for HDR, I did bump Dynamic Contrast from off to medium. This has little to no effect on upscaled 1080p's but makes a world of difference for HDR and a very happy coexistence. Though Custom color space is calibrated, I use Native. BT2020 is enabled. Smart LED is on High. Though I tried renaming input to PC and other hacks, I left most other settings default or close to it. My picture is accurate and very bright in any lighting condition. Blacks are black, not grey. As black as the black bars at times. I lose no detail in shadows. Whites are as white as a sheet of paper. I can distinguish clouds in the sky clearly. Firetruck red is firetruck red, school bus yellow is school bus yellow, skies are blue, and grass is green, etc. HDR is completely evident when the room is brightly lit or in the dark of night. I have to manually turn on Windows HDR to view HDR and turn it off to enjoy Windows desktop. YouTube video, flash player, etc. are correct. Setting RGB full (12bit or what it defaults down to depending) on everything satisfies Video and desktop modes simultaneously. My player is PowerDVD.
I thought everything looked perfect. Then I began to play with your project. As I stated early on, it looked good, but different. Maybe not as vivid, hard to describe. As I learned what your method does, I've been experimenting. I have a lot more tinkering to do. You asked for settings. As it stands now, saturation maxed, contrast +25, brightness -15 are a contender. I'm trying to blow my retinas out when they should be and retain dark detail in shadows. The sun reflecting off a windshield. It takes a while to get used to some things: Should these nightlights be lighting up this night scene this bright now? Is this daytime overcast scene too bright now? I can still see the clouds. Am I supposed to see eyes through sunglasses now, the lenses were so black before? Everything looked darker without HDR but the blacks are still black if not blacker, just not as often? Well, isn't this what HDR enhancement is supposed to do? Maybe it's just what looks good to one person may not to another and vice versa.

The fact that you brought this method to the table for HDR enabled users is valuable for that reason if no other. Providing code and instructions to integrate with Kodi is of more value. Asking nothing in return is honorable.
I agree with you. Going against the wheel is ok and alternatives are welcomed. Don't let anyone whip you into shape. There's tons of technical reasons why one thing is supposed to be better than another with everything in life. Put one display next to an identical display. You got a guy standing behind his with how he set it up saying he spent some time to get it as correct as he could by eye without going overboard. You got another guy standing behind his exclaiming his opponents simply can't compare. He's got his professor hat on, stacks of papers, meters overflowing, testimonies from others, computer science degrees, guages, light meters of every variety, etc, etc. These are experts. You can't argue with them.
I walk up and look at both displays and they look very close if not identical to me.
I often think most of us (me too) watch and listen to our equipment and settings instead of the movie and the music. I have a sport fisher with electronics from one end of the pilot house to the other. Some of my absolute best fishing happened when the electronic aids were never turned on. Yes, a lot of us strive to achieve perfection but overkill creeps in too. When you and your buddy are looking at the screen and he doesn't see a difference after the changes you just made, you disagree because you're watching your settings instead of the movie and you'll swear it looks better. There's nothing wrong with anybody's eyeballs either.
I tried process monitor for Windows HDR on/off reg setting. I pressed Ctrl + e to stop the logging and waited a minute. Pressed it again and immediately enabled HDR. Pressed it again to stop logging once HDR engaged. Scrolled in logs looking for the minute time change I waited difference to find the HDR engage press. There are literally thousands of rewritten reg settings taking place between Windows and Nvidia during the switch to HDR on. I don't think there is one that initiates all of them? I have no idea what to filter? This isn't going to be an easy task for my limited capabilities.
Keep on keepin' on. No reason to abandon the forum and delete your posts though I've been tempted myself.
