I'm not sure why; but, AEL requires the format "%rom%" (note the quotes "). I added these and things work well here.
Just for clarification: the quotes are needed only if you ROM filenames (including the directory where ROMs are stored) contain spaces. On the other hand, 99% of the ROM file names have spaces. A notable exception is MAME and MAME Software Lists, where no ROMs at all have spaces. It does no hurt to put the quotes always. Lastly, %rom% is deprecated, I recommend to use the newer (and more beautiful) "$rom$".
