I don't think you can install on a synology in order to have it play content. Normally you use your NAS for storage and install synology on a different machine like a laptop, PC, raspberry, android box, etc

Kodi has to be run in full GUI mode, so you'd need 2 things to run Kodi on your Synology:

1- A video and audio output you could connect to a display and speakers

2- A version of Kodi compiled for the Synology.

I'm pretty sure the Synology doesn't meet criteria #1, and I know that #2 doesn't exist.

There has been conversation about a headless version of Kodi that you could run on a NAS and then have remote clients connect to it, but I don't think that project is all that close to being completed.

Yeah, as far as I know there is BSD OS but it's possible to compile Kodi from source.
And I meant headless Kodi, yes.
Hardware depends from....chosen hardware, right?
