Story here.

Their launch playlist here.

Just downloaded one, but MediaInfo shows 8-bit and BT709... huh? Shouldn't HDR be 10-bit and BT2020? Looks like this tool I'm using only support H.264. Anyone know how to grab in original quality?

Good job saw the news will try to test it when I get on my HDR TV.

PS: I used a different tool and the results are the same as above.

YouTube HDR videos are VP9 Profile 2. I don't think any of the released boxes (including the Shield) supports hardware decoding for that. I could be wrong here.

@hdmkv: try the mkv version in 4K downloader, that is the one that fetches VP9. I checked "The World in HDR", but mediainfo provided very little video information.

You can also use this guide from cnx-software: How to download YouTube Videos with YoutTube-dl script

It doesn't have to be in bt.2020 to be HDR. In fact (and correct me if I'm wrong), all the browsers now do proper color management for pictures but I'm not sure if it affects video playback yet. (Except the gamma LUT which is inherent in the OS or GPU itself)

Probably should have read the part that Samsung would later update it's YouTube apps BEFORE I ran to log into the YouTube app on the Samsung HDR TV I bought just on Friday.

I really wish there were better ways to tippy toe into HDR that didn't involve buying an Xbox One S and some UHD BDs or to pay for Netflix.

If you were to follow HDR10 Media Profile standards set by CEA or BT.2100 by ITU, it has to be in Rec.2020 with 10-bit color depth and YCbCr 4:2:0 (CEA).

Quote:* Note: HDR10 Media Profile is defined as:
EOTF: SMPTE ST 2084
Color Sub-sampling: 4:2:0 (for compressed video sources)
Bit Depth: 10 bit
Color Primaries: ITU-R BT.2020
Metadata: SMPTE ST 2086, MaxFALL, MaxCLL

CEA: HDR compatible display

Here are two of the HDR clips:

The World in HDR
The Redwoods

They will not play on the Shield (only audio) or the X9S. They will play on the Mi Box (no HDR). Only the Chromecast Ultra and Samsung 2016 UHD TVs will play YouTube HDR. The Shield is now outdated No

@DJ_Izumi: can you try these clips on your new Samsung TV?

Yes, maybe. My answer was in theory.
Problem is, you're not getting the HDR stream with your computer, only the BT.709 SDR version, because your browser doesn't support color management for video plus computers are locked in good ol' gamma.

Agree, in theory HDR doesn't need Rec.2020 colorspace, but HDR10 and Dolby Vision require Rec.2020. I am not sure of HLG.

Well, some more technical details: http://www.mysterybox.us/blog
That was fun:
,,I should note that Resolve doesn't include the necessary metadata for full HDR10 compatibility, lacking fields for MaxFALL, MaxCLL, and the Mastering Display values of SMPTE ST.2086. It does mark the BT.2020 primaries and the transfer characteristics as either ST.2084 (PQ) or ARIB STD-B67 (HLG), which will let YouTube recognize the file as HDR Video. YouTube will then fill in the missing metadata for you when it prepares the streaming version for HDR televisions, by assuming you're using the Sony BVM-X300."

Last night i tried those youtube videos which supposed to hdr but no luck. They played in sdr. First i use my browser (firefox & chrome) as expected they played as sdr.(my video card does not have hdmi 2a) But i have some software (4k video downloader and internet download manager) that i use them download youtube videos. I expected those softwares can download these videos in full quality (4k,vp9,hdr) but downloaded videos are normal 4k h264 sdr videos. So maybe those softwares requred an update. Or like netflix (on a computer you can't access to 4k content) hdr version is available for only the some hardware for example Chromecast Ultra as an app. Using directly youtube on 2016 lg c6 also didn't give me a hdr image. I think the only currently supported device for YouTube HDR is the new Chromecast Ultra.

Those clips are diffrent then i downloaded. (same videos but they are in vp9 format. The videos that i downloaded are in h264) Also when played with mpc-hc they has washed picture like any hdr video. Madvr didnt convert them to sdr (still washed out picture with madvr) Also tried them on LG C6 but same result. Tv did not engage hdr mode just give me washed out picture.
