Bugger. I've broken nvidia again, but at least I know what has caused it.
1. Start out with 100% default settings by shutting down Kodi, rm guisettings.xml, and restart kodi (or reboot)
2. Set "Player > Videos > Adjust display to refresh rate" to "Always", as below:
3. Play a video (eg. 24fps video on a 24Hz capable TV while GUI is being displayed at 60Hz)
4. There's only a black screen (audio can be heard)
5. Stop video, set "Adjust display to refresh rate" to "Off" and the same video plays normally (seen and heard)
