I want to add XBMC to my mythtv box as the main frontend.
What I would like to do is be able to launch mythfronted from a link on the
main menu. (Like instead of weather, it would launch the external app /usr/bin/mythfronend). After I'm done with mythfrontend and exit, xbmc would still be resident or reload.

anyway to do the easily?

There is a guide for that here in this forum dont remember exactly where it's a couple of months old
