honestly I scoured through the manual and couldn't find anything about vertical text in the font section...

It's referenced in the labels and buttons etc (i.e any control that allows it).
Another method (that works for any control) is just to rotate the control using a rotate anim (conditional on "true"). That is infact what the text rotation does internally
