4K/HEVC Kodi 16.1 -> CPU gets 100% but G-Sync OK // Kodi 17.3 -> CPU OK but no G-Sync

Hi,

first of all sorry for my English.

I have a similar problem. I have a i7 6700K and a GTX 1080 ti.

With MPC-HC I play perfectly (cpu use about 20 % -- gpu use about 5%) this HEVC 4K video:

However with kodi, CPUs gets to 100% and the playback isn't smooth.

¿is this normal?

It's not a similar problem but an entirely different one. The only thing similar is that we need logfiles to be able to shed any light on the matter.
It's impolite to hijack someone's thread. This will probably be split by a mod.

To answer your question we need more information like what are your video settings? do you have hardware acceleration enabled in Kodi?
...and of course logfiles.
I think all righthtinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired.

Proper debug log (logging must be turned on in settings) posted to a public pastebin and that URL linked back to this thread.

Ensure your video drivers are up-to-date

Not certain without debug file but if you are using Windows 7, Kodi 17.x will not be able to utilize HW-decoding for HEVC 10-bit files. Related to D3D 11 video-API against D3D 9 in MPC-HC.

Hi,

I thought it was a good idea adding my info to an existing post but thanks for moving/creating a new post if it is better for everyone.

I am using W10 Pro Creators Update 100% updated.

I have done the next testings:

Kodi v16.1
With g-sync enabled for kody.exe in the nvidia-control panel
With v-sync enabled for kody.exe in the nvidia-control panel

With this configuration the the kodi-gui runs between 40-60 fps (mostly at 60 fps) but seems smooth

With this configuration I play 1080p x264 perfectly (low cpu and gpu use) at 23-24 fps (g-sync seems to work ok) --> look for "El bar (2017) [BDRip 1080p x264 Cast. DTS 5.1][GrupoHDS].mkv" in the log file (see link below)

With this configuration I play a HEVC/x265 4K mkv with problems/not_smootly (cpu use between 90-100% and low gpu use) at 23-24 fps (g-sync seems to work ok) --> look for "Passengers (2016) [UHDRemux HEVC 2160p Dual DTS-HD MA 7.1 Subs][dabaka][GrupoHDS].mkv" in the log file (see link below)

--> link: https://paste.ubuntu.com/25270998

Kodi v17.3
With g-sync enabled for kody.exe in the nvidia-control panel
With v-sync enabled for kody.exe in the nvidia-control panel

With this configuration the the kodi-gui runs between 40-60 fps but it do not seem smooth

With this configuration I play 1080p x264 perfectly (low cpu and gpu use) but not at 23-24 fps (g-sync seems to not work ok) --> look for "El bar (2017) [BDRip 1080p x264 Cast. DTS 5.1][GrupoHDS].mkv" in the log file (see link below)

With this configuration I play a HEVC/x265 4K mkv with low cpu and gpu use (better than v16.1 with the same file) but not at 23-24 fps(g-sync seems to not work ok) --> look for "Passengers (2016) [UHDRemux HEVC 2160p Dual DTS-HD MA 7.1 Subs][dabaka][GrupoHDS].mkv" in the log file (see link below)

--> link: https://paste.ubuntu.com/25271061

So, for me:

- Kodi v16.1 works perfectly (low cpu, gpu usage and g-sync working ok) with 1080p x264 files but fails playing x265/HEVC/4K mkv (g-sync also works ok but cpu usage reaches nearly 100% so the playing does not seem smooth)

- Kodi v17.3 works OK in cpu, gpu usage but g-sync seems not to work (so no 23-24 fps for a smooth playing) and kodi-gui does not seems smoot.

I hope this info helps to solve the problem.

Please, let me know anything you want me to try. If you want me to capture my pc-video with nvidia-shadow-play it is ok for me)

PD: Again sorry for my English.

Greetings

HEVC in Kodi 16.1 is not fully implemented, that's why you won't get the HW-decoding working but 17.3 will HW-decode.

No personal experiences but G-sync, which is basically made for tearless gaming experience with max. refreshrate, can be little bit tricky for Kodi UI and videoplayer. To my knowledge Kodi tries to render the UI as fast as possible, unless it is restricted with vsync. On the other hand, videoplayer in Kodi can be set to for example to match the original refreshrate of video file during the playing. Hard to say how all this will work with G-sync...

Hi,

ok about "HEVC in Kodi 16.1 is not fully implemented, that's why you won't get the HW-decoding working but 17.3 will HW-decode."

About "videoplayer in Kodi can be set to for example to match the original refreshrate of video file during the playing", I know it but I thing it changes the audio speed etc, so I don't like it.

About G-sync, it is courious that words ok with v16.1 and not v17.3. Something in kodi must have changed. It is a pitty, with g-sycn I can play perfectly 24p movies.

Thanks

Adjust Display Refreshrate will not change audio speed but Sync Playback To Display will and in Kodi 17 also disables audio passthrough. If you already haven't tested I would suggest at least to try to set the Adjust Display Refreshrate enabled (On Start/Stop) with G-sync.

Is it so that under 30 Hz G-sync will double the framerate (showing same video frame twice) so for example 24Hz will be actually be 48Hz on G-sync display?
