Waiting for Godot here? My solution on TV (using Macbooks): Windowed mode, stretch the window to fill the TV screen. And since KODI's title bar cannot be hidden, use piece of an eletrical tape to cover it up. Solved. None of my Macbooks is overheating now. (Oh well, what else one can do, right?)

 You can hide title bar:

Menu=> Window => Title bar.
