Hi guys,

I recently updated my kodi version to 17.3 (coming from 15.2). Since this update it seems like the user interfaces always hangs.
What I mean is that pressing any of the arrow keys doesn't do anything (either via remote or directly via a keyboard).
I know kodi doesn't crash, because for example, I can still start music from the remote app. Or I can still shutdown kodi via the remote app.
Anything that doesn't involve navigation works just fine.

I'm using this on a raspberry pi zero with raspbian jessy 4.9.35. If you need any further info, just let me know.

I also noticed, that if I run kodi as a user with root access, it does work as expected. So apparently, my kodi user doesn't have some of the rights required...

Yes, it can be insufficient permissions for the user running Kodi.
Take a look a this guide, it says Raspbian Stretch, but it is the same for Jessie:
