Windows 7 32 bit 17.6 freezes on splash screen
#1
Hi everyone

I've been trying for days now to get some sort of kodi runniing.  17.6 freezes on splash screen.  log here: https://pastebin.com/8a5Zr8M2

17.5 and 16.1 both freeze also.  15.2 opens up but throws up errors too often and crashes.

Any help would be much appreciated.

thanks

Hello @jthebox

A few of things wrong with the log...

1. Debug Mode was not enabled. See here for instructions... https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=323719
2. There is 15 minutes missing from the log,
3. It shows you were playing a video then what seems to be part of a normal shutdown.

The log does not agree with what you are stating.

Provide another log with debug mode enabled and capturing the crash. If you can navigate through Kodi, then enable debugging mode in Settings>System Settings>Logging, otherwise follow the link above.

HI @ Karellen

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply.

1. My debug text was equivalent to what was described in the link you sent, however I cut a pasted the code again and re-ran kodi.

2. The 15 minutes missing is due to the following lines in the report:

17:23:58.211 T:4208   ERROR: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
17:39:23.201 T:4208   ERROR: Previous line repeats 1346 times.

3. What you say about running a video during this time is spooky.  All I saw was the splash screen.  I opened up task manager during the period of the logging and it showed between 40 to 60 % CPU usage.  I thought maybe it was loading addons or something.  Maybe it was doing something that appears like a video playing.

4. Anyway, here is log file second attempt.  https://pastebin.com/k7jKDnNG .  One odd point to note is that the splash screen and 60% CPU usage continues until 21:36 when I "End Process".  The log ends at 21:29:56 6 minutes earlier.

Again thanks for your assistance.  The only other items open on my computer are Opera with this website open and Pastebin website.

Here is a screenshot of what I am seeing: http://prntscr.com/jne7yb.

regards

Jim

You still haven't enabled debug mode, so there is nothing to see. Please carefully follow the instructions in that link I provided earlier.

Hi Karellen

So sorry if I'm being a bit thick about this, but I can't see where I'm going wrong.  Here is a printscreen of my xml file,  I can't see any other coding other than these 3 lines at the link you gave me.

The code is correct.

Did you save the file here... C:\Users\James\AppData\Roaming\Kodi\userdata and named it... advancedsettings.xml

C:\Users\James\AppData\Roaming\Kodi\userdata\advancedsettings.xml

This seems to be a problem though... 21:29:58.204 T:2508 ERROR: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED

Do you have your graphics card and its drivers installed correctly?

Hi again Karellen

Yes the .xml file is at the location you mention.

I've been trying now for more than an hour to find a newer driver than windows offers for my graphics card.  Most sites seem to want me to download a driver assistant program.  I also tried ATI CCC which uninstalled my driver and declared that I had no ATI card installed.  I think there are newer drivers but I can't actually find a download link that isn't some sort of con or endless loop.

I get the feeling this machine is too old for this version of Kodi.  Pity version 15.2 doesn't work so well anymore.

Here is driver status http://prntscr.com/jnfopd

Thanks very much for your help, I think I'm on a loser with this old Samsung R60 though (with Radeon Xpress 1200 graphics).

Oh well, at least I learned a bit about Kodi along the way.  And I'll be installing it in my desktop at some point.

regards and best wishes

Jim

Ok, strange that the advancedsettings.xml file is not being discovered. It is named advancedsettings.xml, and you don't have the .txt extension hidden by default?

Here is the minimum hardware requirements. I am not familiar with that card, but it "seems" as if it might be a bit old... https://kodi.wiki/view/Supported_hardware#Windows

Hopefully it works on your desktop.

Update your graphics drivers. They are very unstable that's why you receive errors ERROR: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED

Grab the driver from here, you may get lucky (be sure it's the intergrated variety) https://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Thanks everyone for your assistance.  Unfortunately the graphics card is no longer supported on the official site nor recognised by the ATI autodetect software.  Spent hours trying to update this driver.  Fortunately, I was able to get kodi working first time on my desktop PC.  It doesn't fit with my original plan though which was to have something portable.

I think I'll let this old laptop bow out gracefully and just use it for internet browsers and email.

Again thanks to all for your help.

regards
