I went away and did bitrate analysis on the sources I was using, and finally I have more or less explanation of what's going on. Previously I only had average bitrate info, but i now can see why it was struggling - some action scenes were actually jumping to over 100mbps, and a lot of time over 70mpbs and that was when it had issues. I tried finding out some more or less constant bitrate files, so that I can see what is the breaking point and came across jelly fish demo site. Those files are not really CBR, but they have progressively increasing bitrate. I went quite quite high (well above 100mbps) with some minor stuttering, but nothing like buffering issues I was experiencing before until... I tried the file with an audio. And then the problem immediately came back. I went down to as little as 55mpbs file and the issue was still there. If only stuttering was occurring occasionally without having to see buffer reload percentage then a lot of sources were more or less watchable. Not sure why the audio presence makes such a difference. I tried playing with different options of pass-through or decoding, but nothing really changed the buffering.
At least now I know that buffering does occur at a very high bitrate...
