Kodi 18 - black screen while resuming playback
#1
Hi,
Since I've updated to Kodi 18 (and 18.1) on my Philips Android TV (running Android 8), I started to have serious video playback issues that never happened on 17.6.

Basically whenever I try to resume playback of a video I've partly watched so far, I only get the audio and a black screen. After this happens I'm not even able to play anything else from the start.

What's worse restarting Kodi doesn't help - to play anything I have to restart entire TV and then it will work until the first resume.
Normally I run Arctic Zephyr skin, but also tried to revert to the default skin hoping it's the cause - didn't help.

You can find logs of a failed playback resuming attempt at: http://paste.kodi.tv/eyubusoraf

Any tips what might be the cause? I'm already running out of ideas... Sad

Even more interesting:
When Kodi breaks on one video video playback not only breaks in the app - I can't play anything in Netflix or default media player app either until I restart whole TV.

@eq4ever  pls. try this build if the build process is finished: https://jenkins.kodi.tv/job/Android-ARM/13015/

@peak3d thanks for taking a look!

Your build does seem to be a little better, meaning that some resumes work now (although the picture shows up ~1-2s after the audio starts, but then it's all sync).
However, after a few tries I've managed to find a video that's still audio only when resumed:

Most importantly though: even if I get no picture, it doesn't seem to break entire Android video playback anymore, so I can play such file from the beginning, play something else and other apps like netflix or youtube are still working too! So definitely a step in the right direction.

Are you by any chance using Mii Box. Mine is totally screwed after the Nougat update. Leia, on my Nvidia Shield is fine, although I find 17.6 more reliable. Version 18 is slower to open and video playback not smooth. The only reason I'm staying with Leia is because the new Skins are improving.

same here at Philips Android TV, until yesterday all was OK. Strange is also that Kodi during start is always reporting "preparing for first lauch" even it was launched couple of times before.

I'm using Philips Android TV with Android Oreo on it. Kodi 17 was perfect (besides DTS passthrough...) on this Android version and all the previous ones, but Kodi 18 has:
- slow and a bit laggy playback as mentioned by others, but I could live with that
- broken 'resume playback' feature which up until installing @peak3d build was breaking entire system and forced me to restart TV to watch anything

I'll probably try to revert back to Kodi 17 at least for now - there's no obvious reason to stick to 18 besides having an up-to-date application.

Just registered to confirm those issues. Philips PUS6482 with Android 8.0.
Kodi 18.1 crashes video for other apps. 18.0 didn't do that, but had stuttering video with subtitles.

I've installed 17.6 briefly and I'm pretty sure it also had those stutter issues. So it seems that Philips Oreo and Kodi don't go well together.

I am running 18.1 on an NVIDIA Shield TV and I am getting:
Slightly longer time to video starting after selecting.
2-3 seconds of black screen when coming out of pause.
Preparing to run for the  first time, every time I start up.

@eq4ever

I changed the logic slightliy (back) what means that there is a chence that this try will turn your TV again into broken state.
But I have nothng to reproduce, so I would be happy if you can test and if it fails provide debug log. thx!

2.) @staffie2001uk , @fanysoft , @insync44 : pls. dont hijack forum threads with completely off topic comments.
If you want to know whats going on with your device, open a new therad / or ind one which fits, and provide a debug log.
hx!

@LBP19 pls. read point 2.) of my previous post, in particular that without debug log  nothing can be answered.

Confirming the issue on both 65PUS7601 TVs I have. After Factory reset/Reinstall TV everything works. Then I installed Kodi 18 from Play store and make initial setup. Playback works. Exit Kodi. Start Kodi again. When trying to play a video there is only black screen, audio and subtitles. Netflix app is not working. Youtube app is not working. HDMI inputs are not working (except ARC).

@neven are you able to install the apk I linked above?

Uninstalling Kodi does not fix the issue. Reset to factory/Reinstall TV does.
