Req Parental Controls built in to Kodi (not via add-on)
#1
It's been several years since the last post regarding this, but rather than necroing an old post I thought I'd post a-fresh.

I'm hoping to garner some support for built-in (ie. non-third-party add-on) support for Parental Controls.

Ideally I would like an option that would allow me, in a single profile, control access to content within that profile. Preferably something that can be controlled with a pin-lock based on content Rating/Classification.

I do realize that this presents some inherent issues, such as the fact that not all movies have a rating/classification or even if they do the user may not have set one. However I believe this can easily be mitigated by including a right-click context menu selection to individual content or groups of content (Movies, Movie Sets, TV Seasons etc.) which simply states "Lock" which would then require a PIN.

I have seen recommendations for third-party add-ons such as PinSentry, however many, if not all, of these add-ons have been abandoned or no longer function or don't provide the single profile functionality I'm looking for.

Hoping to see some support for this request.

Show me one child who CAN'T circumvent whatever pincode lockout was set by their parents, and we can talk about how useful of a feature this will be Smile

So does one forego locking their front door because no one has yet built a lock that couldn't keep out a determined thief?

Parental controls are mostly there to prevent casual access and in majority of cases for younger children. And just because a child may at some point gain access, doesn't prevent any parent from changing the pin once discovered or indeed changing the pin regularly & preemptively in order to prevent access.

I still think this would be a useful addition to Kodi.

My comment was partially meant in jest, but if you want to go down this road, there is a difference between a locked door and doing something that you know will ENTICE children to TRY to overcome your security. And if you think that a pincode is going to stop anybody, especially a child, then you have a lot to learn. Pincodes are a very superficial level of security. The child will bypass it without even learning what the code is.

I think probably the best parental control for your media center is just to not populate it with violence or porn.
