I can’t seem to figure out how to make the “wall” view type permanent rather than the default “list” or “widelist”
Is there a way to do that?

Could you please be a bit more specific?
Normally if you change the view to "Wall" for (let's say) movies, then it should stay like that until you change the viewtype again.
If that doesn't happen, then please provide a Debug Log. So we could get more info on the hardware, the Kodi version you are using and so on.
