I have posted this week about some issues I had getting the central (SQL) database setup on a new server build.  Though I got it up and running finally, I am having some issues with movies thumbnails/artwork.  Historically I have always used <pathsubstitution> in the advancesettings.xml to share thumbnails for the multiple PCs I have.  Though I do have it working somewhat, after importing my library a great majority of my thumbnails are missing.  I have read where using <pathsubstitution> is frowned upon, but I have never had an issue with it in the past. 

To me, it seems that something went wrong during the library import.  Also, when I use the "update library" function, it does not auto-populate any missing artwork, though I thought it was supposed to. I can manually add artwork just fine, but this will take a long time so I was hoping for a speedier method.

Also, when I manually adding artwork, some PCs on the network are seeing the changes to only some of the art, but not others.  I have verified that the individual PCs are using the <pathsubstitution> thumbs/art.

I am not opposed to hosting the thumbnails/artwork on the individual PCs.  To try this, I deleted the <pathsubstitution> lines in the advancesettings.xml file.  I can see that some of the thumbnails/artwork are showing, but I am not seeing how to let Kodi scan all my movies for new artwork.

I did read where my textures**.db file might be part of the issue, so I have deleted them and let Kodi make new ones.  Deleting this did seem to make the artwork more consistent when viewing on different PCs, but it did not help completely.

The local image cache doesn't hold your entire collection, when needed it will resort to thumbnails and failing delay local/networked images. I find that leaving a drive off-line for extended periods will result in failure to load up artwork, solution is to rescan or use something like video database cleaner which has provision for a (mySQL) database setup and Texture Cache Maintenance utility (wiki) https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=158373
