Shield Pro how do I control Kodi with an IR remote

I picked up a Shield Pro this week to run Kodi. I am coming from a Windows based Kodi system where I had a USB IR receiver connected to the PC.  When I connect that IR receiver to the Shield Pro nothing happens.  Is it possible to use Kodi on a Shield Pro with a IR remote?
Kodi: Shield Pro 2019
Storage: Synology DS2415+, DS1815+
HT: LG 65C9 OLED, Pioneer VSX-LX503
Speakers: ProAc Super Towers/front, ProAc EBT's/rear, Polk S35/center, SVS PB-2000 Subwoofer

I ended up buying a Bluetooth harmony remote.  Found no easy IR solution.
