Currently hardware with frame packing
#1
Hi, I am new and a 3D fan.

I have a dell xps 15-L502x and a dell venue 11 pro.
On both is windows 10 pro installed. I have kodi as software installed.
Kodi use the 3d hardware options. The results looks very fine.

I want to buy a very small PC/Board/Mediaplayer/Raspberry with kodi and the same results.
I want to watch full HD SBS (3840x1080) in full HD (frame packing).
What currently PC/Board/Mediaplayer/Raspberry can I buy.

My research has shown the following result.
Frame packing is a Top and Bottom image + 45 pixel. (1920x2205)
The new raspberry pi 4 can 4 k.
Can I use the raspberry pi 4 + kodi?

Thanks for reading.

Take a look at rather expensive Odroid N2 SBC. I think it's more potent than RPi4 and with CoreElec/Kodi 4k content works perfectly. It does 1080p SbS and TaB 3D without any problems. Have not tried 3840x1080 and 1920x2205 formats, so don't know how that would work on N2...
Amlogic Odroid N2_S922_4G, Amlogic Box X92_S912_3/32G_Android.7.1.2,  X96Mini_S905W_2/16G_Android.7.1.2 and Mecool KM8_S905X_2/16

We've added support in the form of test builds for 3D MVC output on Vero 4K +.
The new build which should be released on Sunday should make almost all titles playable without issues, but there will surely be some corner cases.

It will probably be a month or so before this is part of the stable builds once we've confirmed it doesn't cause further regressions for 2D playback.

But I dont want the half resolution. Support the Odroid N2 SBC + Kodi frame packing?

Ok, I think I must wait a little bit. :-)

By the way. I have a new PC with a NVIDIA RTX 2600 Super. The new GPU can't 3D. I was shocked. I think 3D is out.
Can a new Intel Nuc modell still 3D?

I think most TV manufacturers stopped doing 3D some two years ago already...

The Pi 3B+ and below do both MVC decode and Frame Packed 3D (not just SBS and TAB) output don't they? It's the 4B that doesn't do 3D?

Maybe I don't really understand frame packing.

For me is frame packing an output signal with the size 1920x2205 pixel and 24 fps.
The left eye image is on the top.
The right eye image is on the bottom.
Between the both images is a black line with 45 pixel height.
The gpu transfer any 3d movies or other input in this output format.
Is that true?

The Kodi display menue (raspberry pi 3 b+) shows only SBS and TAB as output format.
My tv and my beamer identify no frame packing signal.
Since yesterday I have also a raspberry pi 4 b.
The Kodi display menue shows the same.

The pi 4 b gpu shoud be have enough performance for 1920x2205 24p.
I thing I must wait also for a new raspberry pi 4 b Kodi version.

Where do you get 3840x1080 and 1920x2205 video files from ?
Since Odroid N2 has no problem at all playing various 4k formats, I'd like to try these (full ?) 3D resolution. All I can find/download are 1080p files...

3D functionality is in the Rpi4. If only I could find a 3840x1080 video.. Most are behind paywalls.

Quote:Maybe I don't really understand frame packing.

There are two or three things required to play 3D Blu-rays.

1. A device capable of decoding MVC video. MVC is the video format that adds the 'second eye' feed to an existing h.264 video stream that contains the 2D-compatible 'first eye' feed.
2. For full resolution 1080p 3D output not using 4K formats then you need HDMI outputs that support 3D Frame Packed video that allow you to carry 2 x 1920x1080/24p streams in a 1920x2205/24p stream.
3. To play ISOs you also need a player that can cope with the specific ISO format used for 3D Blu-rays (which is not as simple as regular Blu-ray ISO)

AIUI The Pi series up to and including the 3B+ are able to do all of the above three things. The 4B currently doesn't - though it may cope with 1 and 3 and allow a 4K output that is SBS or TAB at full resolution IF you have a 3D 4K display that can cope.

Yes - that is 1080p Frame Packed's format.

Quote:The gpu transfer any 3d movies or other input in this output format.

In some cases yes - you can play HD Half-SBS or Half-TAB (where the file is 1920x1080 but has 960x1080 or 1920x540 resolution for each eye) in 3D frame packed output - and also some systems will cope with Full-SBS and Full-TAB (where the file format is 3840x1080 or 1920x2160 delivering 1920x1080 full resolution for each eye). However I don't think the Pi 3B+ and below can play these FULL SBS and TAB files as they are too 'big' for the h.264 decoder. However you're better off playing the MVC versions anyway - as they will be native quality - and if you are playing media you own, you will have access to the original 3D Blu-ray to source the MVC from.

Quote:Is that true?
Yes

Quote:The Kodi display menue (raspberry pi 3 b+) shows only SBS and TAB as output format.
From memory there is a leave as native or similar option. The Pi series up to the 4B definitely had MVC decode AND Frame Packed output - it was a huge selling point for 3D over other platforms that the Pi had/has.

Ask in the Pi forums for more details - or check out the 3D threads here. I tested my Pi 3B I'm sure with my old 3D TV (I now no longer have one)

The Pi 4B may well have the required MVC decode and Frame Packed output functionality - but the way the new GPU drivers implement various things is still a work in progress. That's not a Kodi issue AIUI - it's more a Pi firmware issue. Again asking in the Pi forum here may be better.

1920x2205 24p is the gpu output. This is not a real video size.
3840x1080 fullSBS    I render a blender animation as video.

I mean the global display settings. I test the same with windows 10 + kodi as software. I find it and use it there. I activate the option "hardware based".
And my videos have no copy protection.

A great thank to noggin. Thank you for your detailed answers.
Ok, I must wait for a new Pi firmware (kernel)

Or I use a other hardware.
Which current Intel Nuc supports the 3D hardware based option?

By the way. Can I upload images here?

3840x1080 FSBS stuff is unlikely to play on any Pi 3B+ and below if it is h.264 encoded, as I think that image size is too big for the Pi's h.264 decoder (which is rated for 1920x1080 and below).

You either need to run at HSBS 1920x1080 h.264 or find a route to h.264 (aka AVC)+MVC encode your HD 3D content - which the Pi3B+ and below WILL decode AND output frame packed.

The Pi 4B also has the same limitation for h.264 decode - but you may find it works via software decode, or you can use h.265 (which the Pi 4B WILL decode at that resolution AIUI as the 4B has a higher resolution decode capability for h.265 than h.264). This doesn't solve the other potential issues to do with Frame Packed output on the 4B.
