Buffering when watching a recording from PVR
#1
Hi!

First of all thank You for all your work maintaining this great and essential addon for Kodi!

I have a strange buffering issues when playing a recorded TV channel from "Main menu->TV->Recordings" ... the video plays for 5-20 seconds ( sometimes a few minutes ) than it starts buffering for 5-10 secconds ... This happens on all my playforms : Windows 10 x64 / RPi3 XBian / i5 Libreelec.

I have a gigabit network, the recording is played back from my server ( i5-4590/8GB/1TB HDD ) - the buffering hapens even if Kodi is running on the same server.
I use Vu+ Zero with the latest OpenATV 6.4 as my PVR. ( I tried it using my AXAS HIS4K Combo with the latest OpenATV 7.0 as the PVR - with the same resoult )

I do not suspect my hardware and setup because the same recording ALWAYS palys back WITHOUT any buffering using "Videos->Media Sources->Files"

Here are the logs ( for Zero and for AXAS ) :
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/zqd7kJYYvd/
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/FSjhp3NKTb/

Could You have a look please ? Thanks!

I have a creeping suspicion that the video streaming code in Kodi has somehow been getting worse. A couple of years ago I was able to view live video without any issues from my Enigma2 (VU+ Ultimo) digibox. With the current Kodi (running on same RasPi2 hardware) video keeps starting and stopping, even with SD resolution stuff (HD no longer really works in any reasonable way). Anyone in the know how much work has been done with video streaming?

Kodi 19.4.0 from Open Source Media Center 2022.03-1 (kernel: Linux 5.10.78-5-osmc)

(I will admit I'm also beginning to suspect my VU+ Ultimo may have other issues)

I also have a VU+ Ultimo and I definitely do not have these issues.

For the recordings a previous issue was buffering when played as a video, but as PVR recordings they were fine.

@pcextreme can you provide a debug log for playing as videos and also for playing as recordings from PVR?

Playing as PVR :
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/rPSrCfxs6z/

Playing as Video :
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/xFbbj5YHGV/

I do not have any buffering issues when watching the same channels from the same box ... only problem is with the recordings.

Thanks!

Ok, I might need you to run those logs again, but this time just send me the logs from after EPG has loaded (maybe wait 10 mins after booting up kodi). Really I just need the playback as a recording and then the playback as a video. Hopefully then I can compare them and figure out where it is going wrong for recordings.

I think your issue is different, it's streaming in general, not recording specific. So it would be best to open a separate thread.

Do You need 2 different logs ( like before ) or start up kodi, wait 10 minutes, then play PVR recording untill it starts buffering, stop playback, start video playback, stop, and send as 1 log?

Here You go :

Started Kodi, deleted EPG cache, closed Kodi. Restarted Kodi, waited for the EPG to repopulate, started playback from PVR, waited for the buffering to start, stopped playback, started it as Video Playback ... :

So only via PVR I see this in your log: `ffmpeg[0x2248ba817e0X]: [h264] hardware accelerator failed to decode picture`

I can you try disabling HW Acceleration and see if playing back from PVR recordings then works?

DISABLED : Allow hardware acceleration - DXVA2 ( under settings-player-Videos )

Still buffering over PVR

I wonder is it a framerate switching issue. Is "Adjust display refresh rate" and "Sync playback to display" off?
