series x smb/nfs access to server crashing Kodi
#1
I'm tinkering with a series x install of Kodi 20 and have attached a smb share that has a dozen or so pictures in it. When I access the share, Kodi exits. I then tried the same share via nfs with the same result. The log doesn't tell me much so I thought I'd post here. There are other Kodi 18.9 instances at this location on Windows 10 (not UWP) and LibreELEC 9 installs on Raspberry Pis that do not have any trouble accessing the same shares (via smb/nfs) (as well as a multitude of other clients).

Any hints?

question. are those images you are accessing large by chance?

wondering if theres a pattern forming in connection with this - https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=372000

They were definitely over 2MB in size.

I just edited them to be under 1MB each with the same Kodi crash result.

It does not appear to be size related in my scenario.

Thanks.

I updated the OP to better reflect some details.

In further troubleshooting, I have had some consistent inconsistency with regard to accessing the pics folder. The xbox has (and does) occasionally open the folder and even display the pics, but mostly just force-closes Kodi. I have also installed v20 x64 on a Windows 10 22H2 PC and have the same result, sometimes it will open, but it mostly force-closes Kodi.
I have also set up another Rpi3b+ with LibreELEC 11b1 (and nightly 20230214-a6d9d93) and there too, sometimes the folder will open and contents will display, but most of the time it restarts LibreELEC.

All the Kodi installs of 18.9 / LibreELEC 9.2.8 continue to work normally as do the other various windows, android and linux devices.

I'm not sure where to best follow-up on this as it no longer seems to be an xbox exclusive issue, or even windows for that matter...

I have since installed 20.1 on xbox, windows and Libreelec (11.0.1) and I can now browse the affected directory without issue. I can do so via smb and nfs (v3 & v4). Rolling back Windows to 20.0 or Libreelec back to 11.0.0 re-introduces the issue. Although I can't roll back the xbox (retail mode), a borrowed xbox still has 20.0, and has the same directory trouble. So, in my non-scientific, near-zero-accuracy opinion, there was the possibility of a bug in Kodi that was squashed between 20 and 20.1.

The only remaining 'problem' I have with Kodi on xbox is the picture slide-show. It cycles ~20 pictures in a directory, but will only do so for an hour to hour and a half before it freaks out and exits. Certainly no show-stopper though.

I'd also like to mention that the xbox (at least series x) is incredibly usable for Kodi (dare I say daily-driver worthy?). It's been a while since I tried it, and back then it was a bit of a mess for my use case. My understanding was that there were no xbox or xbox interested devs. But, wow... It really came along for having no devs!

A big thanks to team Kodi.
