Does ffmpeg support them? That's the question, the only question one should ask himself when it comes to XBMC and codecs.

As far as I know there's only one card on the market right now that can bitstream the new Dolby/DTS audio formats over HDMI. That's Asus HDAV1.3.
However, a protected audio path (PAP) is required between the software and the hardware to fulfill the requirements of the AACS. The most viable solution will probably be to wait for codec support in ffmpeg, then we can use ffmpeg and pass 7.1 LPCM over HDMI. This is supported by many newer video cards.

mean because the new 8200/8300 nvidia boards do pass 7 channel pcm through it's hdmi. Also, when the Asus HDAV1.3 come out we will have the PAP needed, right?
I'm just throwing things that are new that i haven't seen addressed to ths question before.
I've seen this question a bunch but I have never seen the new decoder, new hdmi boards, and new hdmi sound card addressed.

dts hd is partly supported in xbmc on linux/windows atleast. it will decode/passthrough as if it was standard dts.
ac3 hd aka truehd will be mostly supported when we update our ffmpeg libs. (won't be before we release).

primary objective will be:
decode new HD audio formats to multichannel LPCM
and then either
a) Output LPCM over HDMI
b) re-encode to AC3/DTS for SPDIF output

decoding to lpcm would definitely be the way to go then people without hdmi amps and people with can benefit.
hell, that's what they did with the ps3 and I can still get HD sound with a receiver that doesn't do the bitstream hd audios.
