Min C2D for software 720p decoding
#1
Will C2D on 2.2 Ghz (taking into account the problem with non-threaded decoding) be enough to decode in software 720p encoded with high profile (the usual stuff found on the net)

Should be sufficient but that question cannot be generally answered. it depends on so many parameters like bitrate, codec, igp or gpu,... as i said: it SHOULD be sufficient.

add a vdpau card (nvidia) to that and the answer is yes. not really otherwise.

1080p might be touch and go, but 720p will be no problem for a c2d.

I have a dual-core 1.8ghz in my htpc, and every 720p movie i've decoded has worked perfect.

I don't have any vdpau gfx, so everything i decode is done with the cpu.

No lost frames, not that high cpu usage.

dual-core has slightly lower temperature than core2duo, so i think it is a better choice for a htpc.

No issues with 720p with this:
Quote:model name : Intel® Core™2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz

Haven't really tested 1080p.

Thank you everyone..
95% of all my vids are 720p and I wanted to be sure that I will be able to decode them without VDPAU.. I will be getting a mobo with 9400 integrated, but still..
