Use ImageMagick or something like that which also offers a PHP extension. You won't notice any difference between manually resizing in Photoshop and using ImageMagick functionality. The only difference is that you can spend more precious time away from the computer

Thanks for the idea, I've implemented imagemagick and the phmagick library and it appears to give very good results !

But the site is broken in IE8 and Chromium

As it is a valid XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.1, there shouldn't be any issue !
