[LINUX] DVD Playback problems with latest SVN
#1
Since installing the latest svn versions (from ubuntu ppa repository), I have an issue with DVD playback.
The DVD's are stored on local harddisk, I start the dvd by navigating in file mode to the VIDEO_TS folder en select the .IFO file.
When I select a chapter from dvd menu, or just start the movie there are no problems.

However, when i use fast-forward or skip to next chapter, the playback gets all weird.
Sounds is going twice the speed, or video playback is choppy. Audio is horribly out of sync at that point, like 5 seconds or more.
It looks like the player is trying to correct itself, but isn't succeeding in doing it.
The same problem occurs when i stop the dvd, then select it again and choose for resume.

I've tested this with different dvd-rips, so i know for sure that this isn't source related.

Also i did the same tests with avi-files (mostly xvid) and mkv (720p and 1080p x264) and those files are working superb!
So, it's only happening with DVD's.

Before updating xbmc to yesterday's svn I didn't have these problems (think the last time before yesterday i updated like 2 weeks ago)

When this problem occurs, xbmc.log is rapidly filling with these messages:

Does anybody know a solution? Am I missing something or should this be filed as a bug?

I did some more testing and after all it seems to be related to source...
Only some of my DVD rips are having these problems, maybe there is just someting wrong with these rips.
So for now, i'll just convert the dvd's with problems to mkv's and solve it that way.
It's just that converting is a time-consuming process... but hey, mkv's are so much better than VIDEO_TS folders.

You could probably provide those images to one of the devs and they might be able to figure out if it's an issue they should address.

or find a way to rip that does not result in a VIDEO_TS folder?

I am no expert in ripping but is it not a better idea to rip it to an image file or directly to mkv/avi?

With some of the available codecs now, it doesn't make much difference because the quality available in DVDs is pretty low compared to what can be had in an high compression codec. You could compress a DVD to a smaller file using x264 and have virtually the same picture.

DVDs are now pretty bloated when it comes to storage or transportation.
