[WINDOWS] Irritated to no end with "Set Content" and scraping

Thumbs Down
Hello all.. I am a new XBMC user but am frustrated to the point I want to rip my hair out

I have a show called "Generation Kill" in 720p x264 format; each with their own .nfo, sitting in a directory called "GENERATION KILL". I am trying to simply add these files to my Library, under the correct Show Name with Episode Numbers which you would THINK should be an easy task... but its turning out to be one of the most frustrating things I've had to deal with in a long time.

Here are some details...

pathname:
Code:
C:\Users\Public\x264\GENERATiON KiLL\

directory listing:
Code:
Generation.Kill.Pt.I.Get.Some.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.Pt.I.Get.Some.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.nfo
Generation.Kill.Pt.II.The.Cradle.of.Civilization.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.Pt.II.The.Cradle.of.Civilization.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.nfo
Generation.Kill.Pt.III.Screwby.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.Pt.III.Screwby.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.nfo
Generation.Kill.Pt.IV.Combat.Jack.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.Pt.IV.Combat.Jack.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.nfo
Generation.Kill.Pt.V.A.Burning.Dog.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.Pt.V.A.Burning.Dog.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.nfo
Generation.Kill.Pt.VI.Stay.Frosty.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.Pt.VI.Stay.Frosty.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.nfo
Generation.Kill.Pt.VII.Bomb.in.the.Garden.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.Pt.VII.Bomb.in.the.Garden.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.nfo

So I choose VIDEOS on the main XBMC screen, and browse to the GENERATION KILL directory, press "C" for Set Content, choose TV shows, and choose TheTVDB.com as the scraper (#xbmc on IRC told me to use this one) and sure enough, it just shows a box that quickly says "Compressing Database" then it goes away. It never detects the proper show name, episode name, ANYTHING at all. Never downloads any information like it does with my movies when it finds the right result..

The .nfo's all have the proper imdb link in it from what I can tell, are re-named by myself to match the .mkv filenames exactly, everything.

I just can't get it to work.

I hate to ask an obvious question but WHY can't we manually choose a TV Show/Episode Number for instances like this when it's totally screwing up or unable to find anything at all? I just don't understand it.

Here is the output from xbmc.log: http://pastebin.ca/1535566

In this log, I have entered the list of videos and highlighted the Generation Kill directory, pressed "C", set content, chose the scraper, pressed OK. It showed "compressing database" for all of 2 seconds and nothing else. None of the files work if I press "I" on them, and the library is still empty. Aaargh.

I've tried everything -- even re-naming all the episodes like "S01E01 - Get Some.mkv" or "Episode 01.mkv" and STILL it wont work. The log shows it querying TheTVDB.com for completely inappropriate things, like searching for "generation kill pt I get some" to which of course the site has no results. Why won't the damn thing just search for "Generation Kill" like the directory is called and then apply the episodes after..

I'm losing it here... Also, the log is saying my NFO's are "Malformed" for some idiotic reason when they're perfectly fine

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated because I'm at the point where I want to put my fist through the TV screen..

Thanks in advance guys...

Cheers

Did you read through this on naming the episodes?

http://www.xbmc.org/wiki/?title=TV_Shows...Library%29

Particularly:

The defaults will match the following structures/file name formats
foo.s01e01.*
foo.s01.e01.*
foo.s01_e01.*
foo_[s01]_[e01]_*
foo.1x01.*
foo.101.*

could you also pastebin one of the .nfo files?
or check for yourself if they're up to the standards:

read through it, tried it 10 times, and just tried it again and logged it:

I renamed EVERY single episode to fit their naming scheme above ( foo.s01e01.* )

"Found matching malformed NFO file" .. Please do what ronie already suggested and check your .nfo file. In case you need help pastebin it.

Thats not a valid XBMC readable .nfo file. You should consider deleting those files and/or put in proper url nfos in case you want to hint the video info scanner. See our online manual for more information on this topic.

setting the scraper will do nothing if you are using nfo files....
if you decide to delete the nfo files and rename with a valid scheme,, http://thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=...3620&lid=7 thetvdb as scraper should have no problem scrapping it

Hi again..

Well I read this link: http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Import_-_Exp...TV_Shows_2
and it says
Quote:Filename should be tvshow.nfo (Exact, NOT the name of the TV show) in the root folder of the TV Show that points to a show on TheTVDB.com.

http://thetvdb.com/index.php?tab=series&id=73545

So I followed this advice, removed all the old "scene" nfo's from the folder (leaving the MKV's) and made a tvshow.nfo containing the url to the show: http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=82109 and nothing else, and STILL, its picking up nothing.

The log doesn't even mention that it found the .nfo or tried using it or anything.. here is the log: http://pastebin.ca/1536006

I am shocked at how difficult this is!

Thanks for the advice so far but I still can't get it working for the life of me...

Next possible steps anyone?

cheers!

This should not be difficult. Delete your nfos. Change the file name from

Generation.Kill.Pt.I.Get.Some.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv

to

Generation.Kill.101.Get.Some.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
...
Generation.Kill.102.The.Cradle.of.Civilization.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
...
et cetera.

Set content as TV. Use thetvdb. Scan. You should be done.

if nothing else works, try this naming scheme:
Generation.Kill.S01E01.mkv
...
Generation.Kill.S01E02.mkv

IF you still want nfo files after scrapping is complete (don't want to keep all the information in the db file).. settings->Video->Library and export library... choose multiple files and it should create all the necessary nfo files in the tv show folder that is formated correctly.. Make sure you have full access to the share folder and not read-only tho

I agree, it shouldn't be...

Been there, tried it at least 5 times, doesn't work.. Just did it again, followed your advice to a tee.

Here is the current directory structure and full list of files in it:

Code:
C:\Users\Public\x264\GENERATiON KiLL\
..
Generation.Kill.101.Get.Some.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.102.The.Cradle.of.Civilization.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.103.Screwby.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.104.Combat.Jack.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.105.A.Burning.Dog.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.106.Stay.Frosty.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.107.Bomb.in.the.Garden.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv

Nothing else... No nfo's, nothing, and re-named by hand the way you wanted me too.. still getting the same crap as before sadly Sad

Here is the updated xbmc.log:

Thanks again for the responses so far.. I'm perplexed by this all and can't wait to figure out the solution ConfusedConfusedConfused

If i were you i would rename it from Generation.Kill.101.Get.Some.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv

To 01x01 - Get Some.mkv as this is the way i name all my tv episodes
It can be hard work at first but i founf this way works the best for meSmile
ps never had any problems after i satrted naming mine like that

Create a folder and name it Season.01 in your GENERATiON KiLL folder and move all episodes to it. So your directory structure looks like this:
Code:
C:\Users\Public\x264\GENERATiON KiLL\Season.01\
..
Generation.Kill.101.Get.Some.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
Generation.Kill.102.The.Cradle.of.Civilization.720p.Bluray.X264-DIMENSION.mkv
