I haven't found any solutions yet. I ended up switching to Windows XP just because of that problem. Although Intel says otherwise, the Windows drivers for Intel graphics are a lot more refined than the linux versions, and the intel video card on my motherboard is old enough now that no development is happening on it.

I come on here from time to time to see if anyone's come up with a solution.

After screwing around for many hours with various different distro/xbmc version combinations, I reached the same conclusion as fowie - run xbmc under windows XP.

This lets me run a launcher to fire up IE with Hulu or Netflix Watch It now. If only the video quality of DVDs was as nice as it was under linux... I guess that's the tradeoff.

I solved my problem yesterday...

Replaced Jaunty by Hardy (8.04).

Now everything scans fine and nothing froze!!!!! The scanning goes even faster!
(I've got some other problems to fix now, but that will not be a problem.)

Same hardware, different OS... strange
