DVD Playback crashes and returns to XBMC Main Menu
#1
I've had this happen a number of times with different DVDs. Only a few seconds into the main feature, playback just stops and returns to the XBMC Main Menu. This happened once, I quit XBMC and turned on debugging, then it happened again in exactly the same place (log: http://pastebin.ca/1764610). Then I opened the disc in VLC; it playback stopped in the same place.

I rebooted and tried again. Playback got a bit farther, but not more than a few seconds (log: http://pastebin.ca/1764618).

This has happened many times with many different discs, usually Netflix rentals. If I rip an ISO with Brasero, I am able to watch the movie without any similar crashes (here's a log of playing the first minute or so of the ISO: http://pastebin.ca/1764626). Sometimes, if I set the disc aside and try the next day, it will play with no problem.

I actually replaced the DVD drive because I thought it might be the problem, but the same thing is happening with the new drive (same model, replacement-only warranty).

Any ideas what's going on here?

I've been seeing this too, although I'm running an SVN version. Have you opened a Trac bug report.

No, thought I'd check here first. Just opened a ticket: http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/8631

Do you have a Sony disc player? Do you see the same behavior in VLC?

No, a Lite-On slim. Haven't tried VLC.

This happened again last night. Here's a crash log: http://pastebin.ca/1773659
In this case playback from the ISO was no better.

The problem seems to always be heralded by the error log:
Quote:ERROR: Error getting next block: Error reading from DVD.

My best guess at this point is that my drive or driver just can't handle any scratches or skips during playback --- that would explain why this mostly happens with rental discs that have some wear and tear on them. Are there settings I can tweak to make playback more fault tolerant? Is this likely to be a flaw in the drive itself, so that getting a replacement or buying a different model might solve the problem?

I "solved" this problem by replacing the Sony disc player with a Samsung SH-223L. Since then I have had no problems with playback. Note that I didn't get a single "lemon" player: I had two Sony players, one as a warranty replacement for the first, and both suffered from this problem. I still don't know what the root cause was....

if it was the dvd burner then it should still do the same thing in windows shouldn't it. I've never had problems in windows when i had it in my windows machine.
anyway here's my log

I don't actually get a crash log because it doesn't crash out of xbmc
