SMB worked..now it won't. Help?

This is frustrating because I had it working last night and I don't know what I changed or did today.

My xbox is linked to my router (I can FTP), but somewhere along the process of trying to setup SMB for sharing I am messing up:

-I created an account on my Vista pc called "xbox" with xbox for a password.
-Under Network Sharing Center the "file sharing" option is enabled.
-I right clicked in my media folders, went to properties/sharing tab/share button, added the "xbox" account to the list of people to share with, and set up my music and video folders to be shared.

Here is where I get confused. Under Settings/Network in xbmc on my Xbox, for "SMB Client", I have the name and password set to "xbox" (what the user account on my pc is), but what do I put for "Workgroup"? As I said I had it working last night, and for this I think I put the IP address for my Xbox machine? Doesn't matter b/c now this doesn't work.

Anyway I am stuck b/c when I try to open the SMB option (under "find a source" within Music or Videos etc.) where there used to be a list to open and eventually find my shared files, there is nothing listed.

So what do I put under "Workgroup"? and WINS server is blank, do I need to put something here?

Thank you for any help!

Maybe a debug log might give more info...

Or you could try this see if it helps...

http://pastebin.com/4G4QdZN8 - this is for the xbmc log file from Q drive

http://pastebin.com/58En60Nm - this is for the xbmc.old log file.

I also tried the link you suggested but when attempting to locate secpol.msc nothing popped up; said the file could not be located.

You have an old build from January 1 2009 - you should look for a new build (google for T3CH or SSHCS), extract on your PC and upload into a separate folder (e.g. E:\apps\XBMC_yyyymmdd) and try with that one and see if it runs better.

Hmm, that's odd... You should also be able to find it in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy

Ok installed the latest build from t3ch, it's up and running. But I guess I am still confused on how to set up the SMB client. In XBMC, under settings/network/smb client, i am given an option for default user name, password, WINS server, and workgroup. For user name and password do I put the "xbox" user account info I created on my pc? WINS server is blank, and for workgroup name it already says WORKGROUP, haven't touched that yet.

Then I try to add a source for media, browsing down the list until I see Windows SMB, click on that, but there is nothing listed. So I try to add a network location, but at this point it asks for server name, shared folder, user name, and password. What do I put in these fields.

I am not really savvy when in comes to networks etc., and I honestly don't know what I did earlier to make it work.

ps. under Admin Tools on my pc, there is not a Local Security Policy option. What I have listed are:
-Computer Management
-Data Sources (ODBC)
-Event Viewer
-iSCSI Initiator
-Memory Diagnostics Tools
-Reliability and Performance Monitor
-Services
-System Configuration
-Task Scheduler
-Windows Firewall with Advanced Security

I think you might be far better of installing an FTP server on your PC (Microsoft IIS or FileZilla) and happier in the end.

I guess populate those settings in XBMC > Settings > Network Settings, put the username and password and put the same workgroup on your PC. You might still need to populate the username and password on each source.

If you still want to try the NTLM authentication setting, see this KB on how to change directly in registry.

Btw, you original log didn't show anything like trying to access the SMB resources...

I'm pretty sure the Local Security Panel isn't available on cheaper versions of Vista (ie, the sort you got pre-installed on new PCs).

It sounds like the WINS service is playing up. This is used to automatically determine what shares are on the network (and the "names" of the computers that own them).

WINS is a "transparent" service, that is to say, you don't usually need to configure a WINS server, nor do you need to tell all your other systems where the WINS server is. When a PC boots up, it looks for a server automatically, and if it can't find one, it automatically becomes one.

(XBMC uses WINS, but never tries to act as a server).

So when WINS plays up, pretty much all you can do is reboot all the computers in your LAN, and if that doesn't work, fall back to using IPs instead of computer names (hence bypassing WINS completely).

In the server name field, put your PC's IP. The shared folder is, of course, the name of the shared folder you want to access on that PC.

Username and password can either be left blank (if your PC is configured to allow guest access to the shares - by default, Vista does not
("password protected sharing" has to be turned off in the Network & Sharing Center for guest access)), or filled in with the details of whatever account it is you gave access of the shares to.
