In the current svn's of xbmc non-ac3 audio will be converted to ac3 if you have the ac3 support option enabled. I like this option - this is what I used to do with ffdshow when I used it with another media center app.
What I miss though is the ffdshow option to "apply dplii decoding to all 2 channel sources". A lot of my videos have their audio track encoded with dplii, and this is not getting decoded in the ac3 conversion process. DVDPlayer looks like it does it's ac3 stuff based on liba52, and liba52 seems to support the option to upconvert or as I said "apply dplii decoding to all 2 channel sources". So enabling this and providing an option in the audio settings panel (or in advancedsettings.xml) to do so would be nice.
