I know this thread is a bit old, but if anyone's curious, I solved this problem.
If you have Active Background enabled in your skin settings, XBMC will flip out if you try to RDP, since RDP won't do hardware rendering. I found this thread because I was having the same issue, and I didn't connect the dots right away that I had just enabled that option.
