What/where to buy
#1
after playing (buying and then returning) at least two different video streamers that just didn't do a decent job, i'm becoming convinced that a modified x-box is the right way to go, along with xmbc.

however, i'm struggling with information overload - there's simply too much stuff out there to make it possibly to find out what to buy and from where to buy it to get up and running properly.

so i'm wondering if anyone has compiled a list of "what to buy and download" for "what you want to do"

in my case, i want to do for my dvds what the squeezebox (http://www.slimdevices.com) does wonderfully for my cds.

in other words, i want to have my dvds live on a linux server, and have boxes around the house plugged into tvs. those boxes can communicate with the linux machine, either directly with samba if it's fast enough, or with a streaming server (similar to the slimserver used by the squeezebox) and access the vob files so that we can watch movies anywhere in the house (and different movies on each tv)

it's my sense that the x-box can do this but needs to be modified. so i'm looking for a good article that explains what to buy, where to buy it from and so forth.

google brings up far too much "noise" to be helpful.

any pointeres would be appreciated.

thanks,
david jameson

xbox-scene is probably the best place to look for about modding an xbox. there are different versions that all have their own little quirks. if you are getting a new xbox it will probably be a version 1.6 so the points you have to solder are a little different. anyways, check there first and get your xbox modded. they have much more help for the noob there. get everything up and then you will find that everyone is more helpful here when it is xbmc specific

thanks - i realise this forum is focused on xbmc specific issues but assuming that xbmc can stream vob files from linux (which it seems to be able to do, according to the docs i've reviewed) the issue then is to make sure i get a "mod" that will work with xbmc. that's partly the guidance i was looking for and i appreciate your comments.

yes xbmc can stream from linux (either via samba 3.x, xbmsp or xns, so you even three alternatives to chose from once you're modded)
shopping-list; you need: xbox and mod (if new xbox then that will likely be xbox 1.6 so can't softmod), you might want a remote too Wink

also if you find a store stocking old xboxes,  http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/versionsdb.html might be worth a look. it's a shame the list hasn't been updated for a long time. i used it to obtain a box with samsung.

if you in any way can, try to get one equipped with a samsung dvd drive! it's awesome, it'll read anything you feed it with!

but basically, a modded box is all you need. everythig else is software/bios dependant.
