I'm new to xbmc, and was wondering if their is a way to scan for media files instead of navigating through the file system?

There is a file system and library system. Library use scrapers to get info from Internet databases (IMDB).
Manual is good way to start...

I think you may not realise you can switch between 'file' view and 'library' view. Once you've added your media source and scraped it you will have a 'library' view which you can get to by pressing the 'left' key and and enabling 'library mode'..
if this turns up nothing then you haven't added your media source correctly or your media didnt scrape for some other reason.
