Applications must not be compressed archives. You need first to install applications on your system to be able to start them using the command line. You may found additional information here : http://openelec.tv/forum/128-addons/3861...-emulators
If i understand well, i must download the .zip file of the emulator (ie Mednafen), install it as an add on and then create a launcher which point to the installed add on ? (if correct, what is the folder where i can fin the installed add on ? I cant figure out how to go there with the files explorer of OE...

BTW, your actual problem is related to the installation of 3rd party applications (emulators) on the OpenElec linux distribution. This problem is actually not related to XBMC or Advanced Launcher but only to the OpenElec operating system. You will surely have a better support by asking your questions on the OpenElec dedicated forums.
