Is there supposed to be something here in the empty space (circled in red) and if so how do I turn it on, or else get rid of that empty space?

populate your movie folders with a folder named "extrathumbs" with 2 or 4 thumbnails containing scenes from the movie : thumb1.jpg, thumb2.jpg

Okay, so this empty space is for 'extra thumbs'.

I don't want extra thumbs so is there a way to make this empty space go away?

the short answer: no.
probably a switch in the skin for those who don't have/want extrathumbs, but keep in mind that aeon was always a skin focused on eye-candy elements, most aeon users always liked those additions.
