That is how i have it set up at the moment, DVI -> HDMI lead to the TV, then 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead from Mac Mini headphone jack to the lucky HDMI sound input on the TV.

Through this setup, XBMC is a quieter program than all other media players

Am streaming over wifi, I can rule out that as the culprit here? Airport is not the weak link?

I'm not certain, but i think Aiport wouldn't be able to distinguish the video data from the sound data and affect one of them exclusively.
