Advice required, Optical VS HDMI
#1
I've been using HDMI ever since I bought my TV and AVR, however my newest TV doesn't get along with with AVR and my Q180 HTPC.

The Set up
- Q180 is always left turned on, goes to sleep after 30 minutes of non-use.
- TV turns off after 30 minutes of no input.
- AVR turns off after 30 minutes of no use.

The Problem
- Upon turning devices back on, the resolution is either wrong and requires a reboot
- AVR thinks I'm using DVI->HDMI cable instead of HDMI->HDMI
- No problem with old TV and set up.

Possible Solution?
- HDMI straight to TV
- Optical from HTPC to AVR

Problem with Possible Solution
- The only time I used Optical is when I bought my first Minidisk device at the age of 14 - apart from that I've never used it.
- AVR manual is not certain about using true 5.1 audio
- Would like to keep true 5.1, does that work with Optical?

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I know there are plenty of people on here who are far more knowledgeable about home cinema set ups.
