There is a wealth of information here so I'm hoping for some pointers to cut down the amount of time needed to narrow my choices down. My situation is that I already have a NAS on my network and in the past had just run the Windows version of Kodi on my kids TV in the play room via an HDMI out on the video card. Well the windows 10 upgrade has introduced some problems with how that works and after a few weeks of fighting with it and the fact that if I'm not around and something isn't working quite right on the video output they're unable to use it I've decided to look for a small, energy efficient player that can hopefully be powered by the TV's USB port (not a deal killer) and have an interface that a 6 year old can handle. Ideally it will also have a working Netflix option as we are down to antenna at the house now with a modest net connection and a Netflix subscription.
A couple of years ago (before I setup a computer with HDMI out) I bought a Minix Neo G4 with the intention of using it but have never got it to quite work with XBMC/Kodi and it's support has gone to practically nil in their community. There used to be a build of XBMC for it and I sort of had it working but after a hiatus from that project have been unable to find the resources that used to be out there. Lately I've been thinking about the Rasberry Pi options but am unsure if the Netflix will be an issue as well as the ease of use for the kids.
I'm hoping that this can be accomplished at under $100.
So here are some other bits of info if it helps:
- I am pretty familiar with futzing around in most OS's including Windows, Android, and linux
- Our video archive is nothing special as far as tech goes, mainly a mix of SD/HD in M4V, MKV, and AVI formats
- I have a Rosewill HTPC remote (w/ USB dongle) that I'd like to utilize if possible - otherwise a wireless controller of some type
Thanks to any who take the time to make suggestions.
