Win kodi 17+ ass/ssa subtitle renderer is totally broken
#1
Bug
ever since version 17 and up...kodi's not rendering ass subtitles properly with the proper fonts
the fonts are included with the mkv..but its not using them...or reading the subtitle properly
this NEEDS to be fixed...its really annoying for the subtitles to be basically only using arial font for basically everything
this is how its suppose to look
Image
also can we finally give KODI the ability to use the XySubFilter
https://github.com/Cyberbeing/xy-VSFilter/releases
for anime XySubFilter works better then libass
have it be an option in the settings

It's been known for a long time, new versions are being released but this is never fixed. Downgrade or use DSPlayer like anybody else.

You make it sounds like we've been sitting on our arses not fixing blatantly obvious issues, however I see from your post history this is the first time you've reported the problem. You don't mention either exactly what versions you've tried but there has been fixes included in 17.1 that was confirmed as working by others users at http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=308260 so if you have tried v17.1 and still having problems then it simply could be the Team is unaware of the specific issues you are seeing.

ive tried alot of versions of kodi 17 and 17.1 and 18 alphas...none of them are using the fonts properly
however like the guy said above....kodi dsplayer version 17 does work and displays the fonts properly
if its needed I can post the files that are creating the problem

also I did try that ass fix version...it seems to work for some fonts but not others

I do fansubbing so I know how the effects and fonts are suppose to look

to my understanding...what kodi should do when it encounters a mkv with fonts in it..is extract the fonts from the mkv to a temp folder..and then let kodi read the fonts from that temp folder
it would be really nice if kodi could read and understand TTF/OTF/TTC...TTC is a little more complex since its actually a collection of fonts in a single file..so it would be understandable if it couldn't read that easily..however in that case...kodi could extract the TTC file first then read the fonts...

Has this worked in any Kodi version? (maybe Kodi 16)

Try the latest version at http://mirrors.kodi.tv/nightlies/win32/Krypton/ maybe it was already fixed but not released yet.
You can also try the RC and beta Krypton releases at http://mirrors.kodi.tv/releases/win32/old/ and respond back if any of those versions is working as you expect it.

I'm the one responsible for the issues seen in V17 and all of the issues that got reported are fixed in v17.1.

If there still are issues as you say I will investigate this and try and get it working as intended, can't promise any timeline.

Thank you for providing sample files to test with, this helps a lot.

@techguru I've looked at the sample you provided and see that the fonts are ttc files. Does it work if you use a ttf instead? Trying to narrow down what might be causing the issue.

Ah..... You should never had said that...Wink

I've one here, and i've also opened ticket #17433.

BTW, one first thing i'm doing when installing a new Kodi version, it's testing for no-regression in all the test file i have. As i'm a big anime watcher, all my tests files are mostly torture subtitles test files, to verify timing accuracy, correct rendering (including fonts), etc... All my tests files where Ok with 17.1. So, the the remark about font being ttc has a very high probability to hit the mark.

I like to help so i have demuxed the example provided from techguru and i have converted the ttc into ttf. I have changed the subtitle.ass so the example uses every font provided and not the default (DFPKakuTaiHi-W4) only.

After remuxing into a new mkv i have tried Kodi 17.2 RC1 to play the file. After enabling subtitles no subtitles are displayed.

The same file played with DSPlayer and VLC i can see all 4 subtitles lines. All are displayed in a different font and position.

So i guess the issue is not the .ttc fonts.

If you like you can test my modified example from techguru. With this testfile you should see 4 different fonts.
