Linux Xiph codecs + hw transcode?
#1
Hello!

I guess my question can be divided into two... I recently started to design an HTPC, all seemed to be going OK, and then I realized... I plan on using Xiph.org codecs and containers as my primary multimedia storage formats in my NAS and for archival in my NAS.  I also don't think a NAS is the right place for transcoding, I think the HTPC should do this.  So... this means I need a pretty strong HTPC, right?  Because I can't really rely on hw support for the Xiph.org codecs, rather, it'll have to be all done in CPU.  Is that right?

Moreover, some people told me that Kodi isn't a good solution on the HTPC for transcoding, and that something like Jellyfin would be a better choice.  What do you think?

I'll be running on Linux, and using as much open source software as possible.

THanks for any help!

Download some samples and play them on your PC.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.
