There are no more M1 based Pivos XIOS DS left in the sales channel, they are all sold out. The M3 based Pivos XIOS DS replaces it.
Q: How to determine which XIOS DS hardware version you have (M1 or M3) ?
A: Check for the serial number
M1 --> S/N: 0002 G X XX XX XXXX
M3 --> S/N: 0002 G M3 X XX XX XXXX

When new updates are released for the device, do I loose all my settings or are these customizations saved?

sorry to go on about this, but can i clarify once and for all?
if i buy a pivos xios, and install the latest android on it, and the latest xbmc, then hardware decoding will work within xbmc (without having to use an external player) and I can therefore play 720p and 1080p from xbmc?
Yes

Because the Pivos is the only one officially supported for hardware video decoding, at the moment. It is the original
XBMC for Android development target.

The M3 is a faster processor. I think it's 1000Mhz instead of 800Mhz in the M1.

The move from M1 to M2 was dictated by the factory producing the units - Pivos would have rather stayed with the M1.
M1 = 800MHz and 512Mb RAM
M2 = 10000MHz and 1Gb RAM
The team state that the change in hardware from M1 to M3 should be seamless - meaning end users will not be able to detect a difference in performance - the only real difference is needing to use a different build for each platform.
