It's pretty much a personal choice. I separate my music from the images mostly because I don't want a folder of images hanging out with the MP3 files. From a technical perspective I don't think it makes a different.

FYI. There is actually another good reason not to use your main music folder for ASHelper. ASHelper may not use the exact same naming structure you do, resulting in a redundant directory being created. For example.

My Music Directory -> /Beatles/<album>/song.mp3
ASlideshow Directory -> /The Beatles/extrafanart/image.jpg

Unless you name your artists the exact same way that AS does, then it may become a mess.

I'm a long time user of AS and it's brought me a great deal of enjoyment over the years!

I have a feature request: Is there any way that AS could request the Album Artist from Kodi as a backup if the Artist search doesn't return any results? The reason I ask is that I have some music where they differ and no artwork gets displayed, but would if the search was based on the Album Artist.

For instance, Esquivel returns images, but Esquivel and His Orchestra; Esquivel, His Piano & Group; and Esquivel, His Piano and His Orchestra do not. Similarly, Fats Waller works, but Fats Waller and His Buddies; Fats Waller and His Continental Rhythm; Fats Waller and His Rhythm; and Fats Waller, His Rhythm and His Orchestra do not.

Of course, it would make sense to have AS not actually run the search if the Album Artist is a duplicate of Artist or if it returns "Various Artists."

Thanks again for all of you effort over the years on AS!

It looks like the answer is no. I took a quick look at the Kodi JSON call that gives you back information on the playing song. There is (obviously) an option for Artist, but I don't see one for Album Artist. It's possible I've missed something, but for now it looks like there is no way for Kodi to tell me the Album artist. One thing you could do to fix it manually is to find the MusicBrainz ID for the problem artists. If you paste that ID into the mbid.nfo file that is in userdata/addon_data/script.artistslideshowArtistInformation/[Artist Hash] then AS should download the images. Once something exists in mbid.nfo, AS will never try and update it. That's not an ideal solution if you have lots of problem artists, but it's the best I can suggest for now.

P.S. If you need to figure out what the hashed name of an artist is, you can use Artist Slideshow Helper.

Take a look at the AS wiki page (link in my signature). There is a way to specify images to exclude from download. It's a bit manual (i.e. you can't do it from within the Kodi UI), but it does work. I use it to curate some artists that have images are either of poor quality or not something I would want my parents to see. Wink

Probably not. Album art is, comparatively speaking, very small, and I feel it would look really strange in many skins. Many skins scale images to the full screen size, so a 1000x1000 image scaled to 1920x1080 would look really bad. There would also be a substantial amount of work in adding the necessary pieces to download album art, and I have limited time right now to dedicate to this.

I could look at adding an option for an artist specific fallback folder (right now the fall back is to one generic folder for every artist). If I did that you could use another addon to download album art and then point AS to that for artist fallback. Even that might be more complicated than I'm expecting.

So I think I'll stick with probably not. Wink

Well I'm not having any spare time in the next two weeks but would you consider a fallback that downloads album art? Then I could go ahead and prepare a PR some time in the future, it's kind of grinding my gears

Sorry for probably nube question, but AS doesn't show background image (only works in fullscreen mode).
Settings options "Show Background Artist Slideshow Visualization" is enabled.
What should I check next?

I experience simular problems. During music play AS will not show the artist background pictures anymore. What I see is the 'fanart.jpg' from the artist folder.
Recently I'm upgraded to Kodi 15.0 final- still using Aeon Nox as skin,

I already ereased the local cache dirs from AS. Rebooted the Windows machine, but still only the fanart from the artist folder is shown.
I double checked the local cache dirs. There were filled / reloaded with the correct pictures from the scraper process. So I have the idea that only the display mode of the pics is not working correctly anymore.

Can somebody explain what to change in the config or is there a bug ?

I have Kodi 15.0 with Confluence Helix Mods by pkscout skin.

AS is working as expected, I just gave the option in the settings a bad name. That option enables AS to play in fullscreen mode on my Helix mods. I've never tried to do anything in the background. I updated the language file addon to change the setting description to be more accurate, and I suspect it's updated already (if you have auto-updates running). Sorry for the confusion.

You should probably check with the Aeon Nox folks about that. AS doesn't technically display anything, it just sets some window properties so the skin can display it.

Hi. It doesn't seem possible to download images from fanart.tv with Artist Slideshow atm.
In result, you get a black background in music visualisation, when using the artist slideshow addon with default settings. (and there are no previously cashed images)

Nice catch. I have no idea when fanart.tv switched to a self signed certificate, but that is definitely the problem. I have updated AS to not verify SSL certs and will push the update as soon as I can. I don't like doing that, but it's the only viable option (other than going with completely unencrypted communications, which would be worse). If you want to patch your version of AS immediately, go to the addons directory then script.artistslideshow/resources/common/url.py. In that line look for lines 35, 37, and 39. At the end of each line you'll see:

I'm using Kodi on Amazon Fire TV (version 15.0). I updated the addon to the one in the repoisitory and checked that the changes in the previous post were made. However, I still just get a black screen and the following comments in the log:
