While I wouldn't want gifs on the fanart.tv site, what I would consider is if there were full size posters (jpgs) with say up to 120 frames.
Then we could reduce them down to a specific size and generate an animated gif from that, that would mean if a better option came about later (webp maybe) we could use that from the original frames directly, it would also be possible to create the same affect with css, by defining all the keyframes and animating it.
