I think that's how it's supposed to work, looks at the .nfo and grabs the artwork listed. New files it does the same, old one's have already been handled. If you want to get your hands dirty the setting file is userdata\addons\script.artwork.dump\resources/settings.xml

Why delete the local artwork with the intent of re-downloading the same exact images? Persisting your chosen artwork is what it does, and ideally this action reduces the number of times any given library has to download the same image.

By this you mean in the Kodi db it changes from the online URL to the path to the local image?
I didn't realise that. I thought it was tracked in the Artwork Dump database.

Yes.

Nowadays the database just speeds up scanning for lower power ARM devices, pi4 and lower CPU-wise.
It used to also prevent AD from downloading one image multiple times in separate scans, for media with only one, but I fixed that process to work better without the DB in the latest version.

I was trying to understand how the script works.

The settings make it sound as if I can choose to track what has already been dumped to prevent it from being dumped a second time, or to allow me to dump everything all over again if choose to do so. Is there a description of what each setting does? For example, what does the toggle "Track processed items and skip them during later scans" do? If I have this toggled off, I thought I would be able to download all the artwork as many times as needed even if it had been downloaded previously. Based on what was post a few messages back, it sounds like toggle doesn't control what dumped, it only controls what is scanned when looking for potential artwork to dump. Can you confirm what this toggle does?

Is there a way to force AD to dump all the artwork more than once?

This isn't sounding good to me. Is there any way to fix the Library DB to point at an online URL again or do I need to remove all items from my Library and start over? What are my options?

I had a thought, if I go movie by movie and tell each movie to update and ignore local files, would that cause the Library DB to go back to external links? Then I could update the movie again telling it to use local files (I have poster and fanart for each title). Finally, I could us AD again to get all the artwork.

OK. I tested what I just suggested above on a few movie files, and it worked! Actually, I didn't have to refresh twice (once telling the system to ignore local files and then a second time telling it to use local files). I only had to refresh once for each movie and to use local files. I'm not sure that is how this would work for everyone. My NFO files might have something to do with it. My NFO files are a combination of tagged data and a URL (NFO files/Combination - Official Kodi Wiki).

Now I have a new question. Is there any way to tell my entire library to update while ignoring local files so that I don't have to go movie-by-movie and tvshow-by-tvshow?

I have an additional question. How does AD handle artwork for extras?

Not that I am aware of. You would have to wipe your library and start again.

Bummer! Oh, well. I still haven't moved all my movies from my last system (YAMJ for the Popcorn Hour) to KODI for this very reason. I want to understand how the system works before I fully invest the time to move everything over.

When I export the NFO files using the Library Export function, how are Extras handled? Will there be a new NFO file that contains the names of extras and artwork I've chosen? Please note that all of the artwork for my extras is stored locally.

No. There are no nfo files for Extras as they are not library items.
For movies, you use the Video extras (wiki) feature, but for tv shows you still use the Add-on:Extras. Neither use nfo files.

I recently had to update a "ton" of my library files due to updated in TVDB entries. TV Rename handled the mpg and nfo file renamed. It didn't touch the artwork. I ended up deleting thousands of jpg files. Poster, thumbnail, etc.

It seems there is some concern Kodi exporting artwork becoming lower quality?

This add-on updates EXISTING artwork?

It does not rename artwork to the current name?

I wonder how most users keep their artwork names to match updated media and nfo files?

What do you mean updated TVDB entries? Once entries are there, they stay. It is extremely rare for entries to be shuffled around. And the only reasons I know of is due to duplicate episodes, or some outcry from the community that it is wrong.
To say you have updated thousands of entries, I find unbelievable.
Give us a few examples.

Because TVDB has an open process of allowing account holders to update, correct and in some cases provide complete information on TV programs and series, even as I have done, the name of an episode will change or the episode plot may change or the order of episodes may change.

When you run for example a library scan with TV Rename, it will flag missing episodes and in particular to this conversation, it will highlight the old filenames and what should be the new filenames.

For example if the Monk original scrape from TVDB was S01E01 - The Cat and someone correctly updated on TVDB' s site to S01E01 - The Cat Burglar that is flagged. A rename takes place and the nfo file is updated. The artwork is not. So you are left over time with lots of old artwork lingering in season folders.

Many times the order of certain episodes are changed on TVDB. Those get flagged for correction as well.
