Design for Kodi
#1
Hi my name is Julian, recently I was working with some sketches for Retroarch. Finally, due to lack of time, they couldn't carry out the design I did, so they suggested that I contact Kodi's staff because they will soon launch a retroplayer platform based on Libretro.

The problem is that there is no contact where I can write and send my designs in case they want to implement it (fully free of charge, of course).

What is your design for? Is it for the frontend? In that case, Kodi uses its own skinning enigne as a frontend for retroplayer. The emulation itsself is handled by the cores and passed on to the rendering component of Kodi.
Anyway, I am sure everyone would be interested in your design ideas as they might help to improve the skinning part. I would suggest you post your sketches here as the retroplayer part of Kodi is still beein worked on. Smile

Just upload the images to https://imgur.com/ and then post a new thread in public so that the whole community could see them.

That is how it is done in the skinning forum, see => https://forum.kodi.tv/forumdisplay.php?fid=160 and => https://forum.kodi.tv/forumdisplay.php?fid=12

Also checkout this existing thread discussion RetroPlayer OSD => https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=315263

PS: Team-Kodi does have contact info on the website as well, but don't think those are for this purpose https://kodi.tv/contact-kodi-team

Hey Julian,

If anyone, I guess would be the contact for RetroPlayer stuff. I'd love to see your mockups. I've put a lot of work into the new Game OSD. You can follow its evolution in the RetroPlayer OSD thread that RockerC linked to.

Thank you very much for all your answers.

I'm not very familiar with this forum, so in principle I'm going to leave the designs on this post so you can see them!

Neat mockup. I like the clean look and use of artwork. The navigation looks intuitive, minus the play button (is that meant for a mouse?).

The platform navigation at the bottom might not work for Kodi. If you've used our existing libraries, you'll see that selecting a platform opens a new window. This scales better when there's other ways to browse games, such as year, genre, player count, etc.

I have a radically different idea of how I want save slots to work. I want to use a generic "saved game" manager that encompasses both save slots and in-game SRAM saves. Screenshots can also be considered saved data, so maybe lump screenshots into the new saved game manager.

However, this sexy mockup makes be reconsider making screenshots part of the saved game manager and promoting them to a first-class window.

Ick. I refer to the proliferation of settings, not your design. Each settings has a complexity overhead, and I consider this cost heavily before adding a setting.

In summary, I feel that you've brought a lot of good ideas to the table, and we'll have to consider how they integrate into the current design paradigms in use by Kodi and RetroPlayer.

Thanks everyone for your answers.
I'm from Argentina, so my english isn't good enough, but I'll try!

garbear, it's not intended for the mouse. The idea is that the menu below is the first level, where one pressing "Play" takes you to the second menu: choose the platform. Once the platform has been selected, the corresponding games are displayed.

it would be good to find a middle point where you can link this design with the Kodi platform, do you think it's possible with some adjustments? I have no problem modifying the design for it. Even this design would be good as a separate platform!

Can you create a mockup for how it would look using Estuary skin elements? That's what we'll be building the initial version with.

Hello, garbear!

I'm back in business. I had an accident that kept me away for a long time, but here I am again.

I want to pick up and finish the design for your platform. However, I have a question: Can I make a complete kodi skin? or would it have to be for the video game part only?

In either case I would need to know: on which retro platform add-on should I work on the graphical interface?

Hey rodeirojg, glad to hear about your recovery. The goal is a game library in Estuary, but a design in any skin is a good step. Until we get a game database, you'll probably have to modify a game add-on. IARL is known to work, and others (like Advanced ROM launcher) might have been updated to scrape ROM info.

It's good to hear you are back and recovered. Just to correct/complement Garbear's answer. Advanced Emulator Launcher already exposes metadata and artwork to skins. AEL has a metadata database with thousands of games you can readily use and is also able to scrape online both metadata and artwork from several places. AEL also has full support for Retroplayer. Also, I have created a mod of the skin Estuary to support all AEL's features, but the views are cheap and far from perfect. I believe that what AEL exposes now to skins is very similar to what the games database would be in Kodi once it's coded. If you wish, have a look into AEL's thread, there you will find information about the addon and also Estuary AEL mod. It would be great if you can use Estuary AEL mod as an starting point for your design. I'm open to discuss any features you or somebody else may think about the future games DB and implement them in AEL right now.

If you feel your English is not good I can speak Spanish, send me a PM.

Hi Wintermute0110,

Yes, I have trouble writing in english jajaja!, but if you can speak in spanish I prefer to try it that way because there are some aspects I didn't understand.
I tried to send you a PM but Apparently I "don't have permission" for that. You know why the system won't let me? how else can I contact you?
