I have made succesfully this setup.
1) in living room - htpc - boot from 2gb flash, network-connected to my roof-pc.
On this htpc - installed xbmc live with these changes:
added repo https://launchpad.net/~henningpingel/+archive/xbmc to sources.list, and updated xbmc version to 9.04~pre+pvr-api+pvrclient-vdr~hepi-intrepid7

2) roof-pc - lowcost pc with some disks (swraid), dhcp server, mail server, dvb-t cards, network/movie/music storage.
On this roof-pc - installed ubuntu server 9.04
added repo
https://launchpad.net/~mirak-mirak/+archive/ppa and installed modified version of vdr 1.7.7-0+ppa2 and streamdev 0.3.4~cvs20090525-ppa2 (you should install vdradmin-am from officialy ubuntu repos for "web-frontend").
i configured vdr, started.

In this setup, all works out-of-the-box. You must configure vdr (channels.conf) and setup xbmc.
Now i am able to watch tv in "elegant" way.

I have same setup as on my htpc on an older ibm r60e notebook - which act as a mobile tv/movie/music station for my kid

I'm waiting for nvidia ion (zotac boards or other boxes) to be available in our country. After that i'll change "big" htpc to this small thingies

I'm really excited by this and plan to try it out ASAP. I've no experience with VDR though - is it possible to have VDR located on a server and have use the stream-dev plugin to stream to quiet client (hopefully an ion based one in the not too distant future )?

I spent a few hours yesterday installing vdr and I couldn't get the backed to start .

Could someone suggest a decent tutorial or maybe post a quick how to ?

Where does vdr log to?

Edit: It now works, I dont know what oi have done differently, but it works!!

Exactly my setup. 2 xbmc clients (htpc 100mbit cable+ mobile notebook wifi) and one "roof-pc" with vdr and some disks for storage

there are newer version of VDR now, the installation method stays the same. I would advise to first go for the 1.7.4 and later follow the same steps for a newer version (1.7.4 is considered more stable than the newer development versions)

Note: Below I don't mention vdr-plugin-streamdev-server for reasons of simplicity. When I talk about VDR packages I implicitly mean VDR core + vdr-plugin-streamdev-server.

You can either use special builds of VDR 1.6.x (current stable release) or special builds of VDR 1.7.x (development version) with special builds of XBMC. freezy, author of this thread, went for the VDR development version. When he wrote this tutorial, 1.7.4 was the latest version. (currently, version 1.7.7 is the latest.)

The big difference between versions 1.6 and 1.7 is that 1.7 has support for DVB-S2 and H.264. If you don't have a DVB-S2 card, there is IMHO no urge for you to use 1.7.x. You can stay with 1.6.x. If you want to watch HD-channels that are broadcasted via DVB-S, DVB-C or DVB-T using VDR 1.6, you need to compile it with the H.264 patch to handle them. (The packages by gda mentioned below contain the H.264 patch).

The ordinary repositories to get VDR-packages from (debian, ubuntu, e-tobi.net, hanno.de) don't feature packages yet that are equipped with the necessary patches for XBMC. There are some individual Ubuntu package repositories where you can get VDR+XBMC packages from, most of them were set up by members of the German VDR community (vdr-portal.de):

For example, you can get VDR 1.6.x packages with XBMC-Patches from gda's PPA (https://launchpad.net/~gda-dachsweb/+archive/vdr). You can get XBMC packages that contain the VDR-patch from my PPA (https://launchpad.net/~henningpingel/+archive/xbmc). mirak (active in this thread) has VDR 1.7.x packages in his repository.

If you want to build VDR 1.6 packages with H.264 and XBMC support yourself: I wrote a small tutorial on how to build VDR 1.6.x with XBMC-Support in German language:

channels.conf normally resides in /var/lib/vdr/. VDR should be automatically started on boot, check your logfiles to see why it stopped on boot. Maybe there is a problem with missing config files.

Starting stopping VDR manually:
sudo /etc/init.d/vdr start
sudo /etc/init.d/vdr stop
sudo /etc/init.d/vdr restart

The basics, surely. However versions have changed in the meanwhile, so you may try to get it running differently with current latest versions. Let me know if you have an updated version so I can update the first two posts.

Do you have a problem with the TV background in main menu?

I have a black screen when I case the TV in main menu. I tried to change the TV background in the Setup menu but when I change it than screen is still black but the Video background is changing.

at the moment i am running xbmc from the svn ppa @ ubuntu jaunty.
185.18 nvidia drivers (gda) @ 8400GS 512MB
(Asrock Board, 2GB, Be-2400 CPU)

so what would i have todo to get xbmc+vdr working together ?

get the packages with apt-get ? (after adding the ppa with their keys)
setting higher priority for vdr related packages to "PPA named vdr for Gerald Dachs" ones ? ( /etc/apt/preferences )

is the firmware for dvb card included ? (i have a ff-dvb-s hauppauge nexus 2.1)

install packages:
xbmc (from hepis ppa)
vdr (from gda)
vdr-plugin-streamdev
choose channel.conf ?
configure pvr-client settings in xbmc ?
the tv-option at the home-screen of xbmc should be available ?

lirc is handled though xbmc only, right ? (or is a learning of buttons for vdr needed)

I have updated some weeks ago the xbmc with recent pvrclient svn https://launchpad.net/~mirak-mirak/+archive/ppa

however since I messed up the version number in the previous package, you must remove this old package, because apt believe the new one is older than the old one
