Kodi Windows MVC Builds by @afedchin

===================================================================
Download latest: 21-March-2017 Windows MVC build (recommend)
(Kodi 17.1 MSDK MVC WIP)
(Changelog, recent activity by @afedchin)

Last recommended build: 1-February-2017
===================================================================
WIP = Work-in-progress. There may be some issues; warned not to expect 100% reliability
(but, these builds have been pretty much perfect at this stage)

Important Points about MVC Windows Builds from its Developer:
  • MVC development is done. Only bug fixing will happen, with continued support for 17.x. @afedchin isn't sure about "Leia" 18.x support for now
  • As it stands, there is no possibility to merge MVC into mainline as MVC feature requires a patched build of ffmpeg, which unfortunately is not acceptable for mainline
  • Given above, Kodi MVC Windows will remain as a fork (similar to SPMC or MrMC on Android/iOS)

Overall 3D MVC Options, Formats, Tips and Titles:

Please see this stickied thread.

Overview and Purpose of Thread:

This thread and spreadsheet linked above are for compiling user-verified Intel hardware w/Intel Graphics working reliably, with issue-free playback of MVC 3D ISO's, preferably w/HD audio bitstreaming. The issues we've trying to avoid include lip sync error, tearing, wobbly/wavy/shaky video, blurriness or other unwanted artifacts. Most of these artifacts seem to be related to incompatible graphics drivers.

For those of us who want 4K, let's discuss which Intel options exist now (most 8-bit and [email protected] or some [email protected]), and which are on the horizon (10-bit).

Above spreadsheet and this post will NOT cover AMD h/w as it's a software-only MVC solution, and there are more reports of failures than successes. Also, it will not focus on non-Intel graphics like nVidia. However, there's confirmation from @brazen1 that the latest builds work well on systems w/nVidia GPU's. This file (libmfx32) must be downloaded and extracted to the installation folder (usually at C:\Program Files (x86)\Kodi\).

Steps to Take for MVC with your NUC/HTPC:
  • Use Windows 10. If you're continuing to have graphics driver issues even after trying below, see if Windows 8 (and driver for it) may resolve issues.
  • Use Intel's Driver Update Utility to scan your HTPC/NUC and download/install the latest suggested drivers, especially graphics, audio, LAN and BIOS. This utility seems to point to the most ideal drivers (in most cases, not all) vs. simply downloading latest from Intel's website or using Windows update. But, Intel's website or doing update via Device Manager may work better for some h/w (example).
    - Alternative driver app is Driver Booster. @sarcoptic has let us know "their database has quite a few new drivers over what Microsoft Update and Intel Update utilities could find."
  • Make the necessary Windows, Intel graphics and Kodi settings as shown below in the photo slideshow!
  • If you're installing another Kodi MVC build, uninstall the existing version first (but, you can leave your profile folder by not checking the box to delete it when prompted during uninstall).
  • [Optional] Use Launcher4Kodi to get that OpenELEC-like experience.

Necessary and Recommended Settings:

New and Upcoming Intel Hardware (Especially for Full 4K):
HDMI 2.0a (and/or DisplayPort 1.2), HDCP 2.2, 10-bit HEVC h/w decoding
Tips & Other Considerations:
  • Blu-ray menus are not fully supported; may work with some titles. If you need full BD-Java menu support w/your HTPC, an external player solution is still necessary. See @brazen1's excellent guide here.
  • Dolby Digital Plus is broken at this point, it seems w/Kodi 17 builds in general. Workaround: Disable DD+ under passthrough so you'll at least get multichannel 5.1 out of 5.1/7.1 DD+.
  • For uninstalling whichever Kodi Windows build you have in order to install the latest build, just
    1. Uninstall existing Kodi using its uninstaller (in Windows Settings > System > Apps & Features > Kodi)
    2. During uninstall, when you're prompted if you want to delete your profile folder, do this
    3. Install new build
    4. When you run new version of Kodi, your media files and settings should all be intact

Right-eye-first 3D Titles::

Auto flip-eyes works, but in case you need to manually do it, here are known right-eye-first 3D Blu-ray titles. See this and this on how to manually flip-eyes for these.
  • Bait
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Trader

Hi, back from the "Work in Progress - Windows 3D MVC Bluray test builds" Threat, I am very confused. I have ordered a Intel NUC DN2820FYKH and now i read that there are problems with lip sync errors with 3d isos and hd audio. Ok now i have time to cancel my order and switch to another nuc. But witch kind of nuc should i buy. HDMKV wrote that he will favors a i3! But there are many generations of i3.
Please, what kind of i3 should i buy. I need everything (passthroud, hd audio, full hd 3d iso playback, mkv etc.) except 4k.

If money is not an issue I will look into i5 4th/5th, but if you are looking into i3 then the 4th/5th gen should do,I have Blurriness issue with the i3 6th Gen, so I don't know if I will advise that, but you can still try,it could be something that I was doing wrong.

yes no blurriness here at all so it could have been a NUC issue or something else, just perfect crisp video with i3 6300(6th gen) so imo i'd go 6th gen, the only reason to go for old hardware would be cost..

Think I'll use audio delay (actually audio advancement using minus 500ms) adjustment for now w/my Celeron NUC for 3D ISO's, then wait for Kaby Lake... hopefully we'll see NUC's w/it by Holidays.

@brazen1, re: the audio offset via Kodi, does it affect all videos? Wouldn't want that as 3D MVC & 2D MKV's are playing w/o audio sync error.

Ok, but why should i buy a 6th gen and not a 5th or 4th gen. What are the benefits of 6th gen that justifies the more costs?

If you can get a 6th gen for about the same price as 4th/5th, I'd get it... but, as for being 4K-proof, better to wait for 7th gen in Q4 of this year.

Question, do you have at every movie you play the broken audio/video sync? Then you are right and you can adjust it for every movie. But if its only a 3D Iso problem how would you adjust this in kodi? Is there a option to say only XXXms adjust for 3D Iso files?

It's just 3D ISO's... which is why I was asking @brazen1, who suggested the audio delay in the dev thread. Maybe there's a way to have audio delay apply just to ISO's via advancedsettings.xml?
