On you go, and tell us how you get on...

iirc, the ATV2 OS (and all iOS, for that matter) is based on Mac OSX. I remember that being one of the big points when the original iPhone came out.

XBMC is an app, not an OS.

But it seems like ATV2 hardware is capable of playing back 1080p.

Link says it can decode but downscales to play.
I suppose that it technically can play 1080p, but I would prefer it to display 1080p considering everyone owns a true HD TV set nowadays.

Sure but once you got into the system you can do basically everything as long as the hardware is capable of doing it (which it seems like it is).

I hope that is the case.

This brightened my morning. Looking forward to hear what the announcement is! ATV2 native XBMC app?! Can't see it

I'm guessing what Superorb was asking was an XBMC Live installation, in theory possible with enough time and effort and a custom XBMC Live build I guess, much like installing Android on iPhone. It would be nice to be running a full XBMC setup on a £100 box! *fingercrossed*

The Mac Rumours thread suggests it doesn't handle any serious 1080p content w/o stutttering under iOS - just a few low bit-rate trailers.
But the GPU is the same as that of the Boxee Box, so in theory the hardware should be capable of full fat 1080p Blu-ray rips (50Mb/s)?

Is it possible in ANY WAY to get XBMC on an ATV2 box? If that means a new OS too, than so be it.
I know you're dancing around the real issue here, and you know EXACTLY what I'm getting at

LG's new box is interesting. It's using a Broadcom processor and the hw video decode is handled by an on-die Crystalhd
