Check this new guide out from Lifehacker to setting up a XBMC media center from start to finish:

Create a Kickass, Seamless, Play-Everything Media Center: The Complete Guide
pretty much all you need to know!

and it has come at a time when people on here! are moaning about how complicated xbmc!
It's a pretty good start up introduction, well meaning and informative, it gives you an overview of the program. It's just when people get hung up on some obscurity (not helped by the un-intuitive GUI) or have a genuine gliche with their hardware/software that the forum gets traffic. I don't know how many people actually use XBMC regularly, but leave us to say if it's installed on your hardware, it's in use, and that number would be ~ a million+ and enough to start making dedicated hardware for.

Articles like this will definitely help XBMC climb to new heights.
I read somewhere (might be wrong) about MS no longer supporting/including WMC on win8
The forum is going to get a lot more users soon.
